ANOTHER STRIKE LOADING! ASUU Threatens To Shut Down Universities

Published

on

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to resume its suspended nationwide strike if the federal government and state governments fail to urgently address outstanding issues affecting university lecturers.

ASUU said it could reactivate the strike “without any further notice” over the incomplete implementation of the December 2025 agreement, payment of the remaining 3.5 months of withheld salaries and non-remittance of billions of naira deducted from lecturers’ salaries.

The union’s position was contained in a statement sent to our correspondent in the early hours of Friday by its President, Christopher Piwuna, after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council held at the University of Abuja.

ASUU said the December 2025 agreement followed more than eight years of negotiations and struggles but had not been fully implemented by the Federal Government and several state governments.

“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to FULLY and COMPREHENSIVELY address issues bordering the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” the union warned.

It commended Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and the governments of Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina and Borno for commencing implementation of the agreement.

The union said Kano, Edo, Plateau, Taraba, Gombe and Bayelsa had also pledged to commence implementation in September or October, while warning other states to act before their universities were plunged into an “industrial crisis of monumental proportions.”

On withheld salaries, ASUU acknowledged that the Tinubu administration had paid four of the 7.5 months withheld during the Buhari administration but demanded the immediate release of the outstanding 3.5 months.

“We have consistently acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for paying four (4) out of the withheld salaries. However, leaving out the unpaid balance does not give his government the full credit of a labour-friendly administration,” it said.

ASUU also alleged that pension contributions, cooperative deductions and union check-off dues running into billions of naira had remained unremitted for several months.

The union warned that the combination of unpaid salaries, unremitted deductions and poor implementation of the agreement was threatening industrial peace in the universities.

“In no mistaken terms, ASUU posits that the non- or haphazard implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement by federal and state governments is a recipe for industrial crisis in Nigeria’s public universities,” it stated.

It urged the Federal Government and state governments to act quickly, insisting that it would not accept responsibility if the suspended strike was reactivated.

“ASUU-NEC resolved to notify all concerned that the Union may activate its suspended strike action without any further notice if the critical issues raised in this release are not speedily addressed,” the union said.

20 New Doctors Inducted: Babcock University Makes History Again

Published

Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, weekend, inducted 20 newly qualified medical doctors of the Orion 11 class, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare workforce amid a critical shortage of medical personnel.

The doctors were inducted at a special mop-up ceremony held at the 600-seater auditorium of the Benjamin Carson Sr. College of Health and Medical Sciences of the institution.

Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari, represented by the Head of Registration Department and Assistant Registrar of the Council, Dr. Tijjani Ali Mandaka, described the induction as a defining moment in the professional lives of the new doctors.

He urged the inductees to practise with empathy, humility and respect for other healthcare professionals, stressing that effective medical practice depends on teamwork.

He also advised the new doctors to secure housemanship placements within the mandatory two-year period using their provisional registration certificates, warning that failure to do so could require them to sit for a reassessment examination.

The MDCN official further cautioned the doctors against careless use of social media and encouraged them to seek guidance from senior colleagues whenever necessary.

Speaking on behalf of the MDCN leadership, Mandaka reaffirmed the council’s support for institutions expanding Nigeria’s medical training capacity while maintaining professional standards.

“Our priority is to ensure that every doctor inducted into the profession is competent, compassionate, and ready to serve Nigeria’s healthcare needs,” he stated, adding that they should seek guidance from seniors whenever necessary.

In her remarks, Medical Elder, Prof. Adeola Adebola Shokunbi, advised the inductees to make compassion and honesty the hallmarks of their practice.

She urged them to embrace continuous medical education, maintain healthy relationships and resist the temptation to make financial considerations the sole motivation for practising medicine.

“A doctor who doesn’t read is a dangerous doctor,” she cautioned.

President/Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Afolarin Olutunde Ojewole, congratulated the inductees and their families, urging the new doctors to prioritise quality patient care.

“No patient will ask about your graduation date, but about the care you give,” he said.

The provost of the college, Prof.  Adeola Fowotade, described the induction as a covenant with humanity, noting that medicine is a calling rooted in service.

She encouraged the doctors to continue learning, adapting to changes in the profession and demonstrating genuine concern for the people they serve.

Why ASUU Just Declared An Indefinite Strike At Plateau Varsity

Published

on

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University, Bokkos chapter, has declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike over what it described as the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily address its six-point charter of demands.

The union announced the industrial action on Wednesday after its congress meeting, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration on August 11.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, and made available to reporters on Wednesday, the union said its demands remained unresolved despite the expiration of the ultimatum.

The demands include the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and payment of arrears from January 1, 2026.

Others are the provision of safe and secure staff quarters, construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence, and an end to what the union described as the intimidation of union leaders.

The union also demanded the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.

According to the statement, “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed.”

It said following the approval of the National Executive Council of ASUU, Congress resolved to proceed with the strike action.

The union consequently directed all its members to suspend academic activities until further notice.

Stuck With O’level Upload? Do This From Home and Avoid JAMB Disqualification

Published

on

Candidates can now verify and upload their O’level results from the comfort of their homes without having to make an unnecessary visit to a Computer-Based Test centre, under a new arrangement introduced by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The development was announced by JAMB’s Acting Director, Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, in a statement shared on X on Monday.

Benjamin said the Board had facilitated the verification of candidates’ O’level results directly from the examination bodies responsible for conducting the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, beginning with the West African Examinations Council.

He said candidates could now upload their O’level results from home while JAMB verifies the results directly with the issuing examination bodies.

“UPLOAD OF O’LEVEL RESULTS FROM THE COMFORT OF CANDIDATES’ HOMES,” Benjamin said.

“As a responsive organisation committed to providing efficient and accessible services, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has facilitated the verification of candidates’ O’Level results directly from the various examination bodies responsible for conducting the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), beginning with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

“Consequently, candidates can now upload their O’Level results from the comfort of their homes, while the Board undertakes the verification of such results directly with the issuing examination bodies.”

According to the Board, the initiative is aimed at making its services easier, faster and more convenient for candidates.

“The initiative is part of the Board’s renewed commitment to making services easier, faster, safer and more convenient for candidates,” Benjamin said.

“By using technology to reduce unnecessary visits to CBT centres, queues and manual processes, JAMB is putting candidate ease of service delivery at the centre of its operations.”

JAMB said the arrangement would also help address problems associated with manual O’level result uploads, including misplaced or mixed-up paper results, unverified or fraudulent results and errors in entering subjects and grades.

“The new arrangement also addresses challenges associated with manual O’Level result uploads, including misplaced or mixed-up paper results, presentation of unverified or fraudulent results, and errors in the manual entry of subjects and grades,” Benjamin said.

Through the integration of JAMB’s e-Facility platform with examination bodies, results can now be verified against the records of the issuing examination bodies before being downloaded into candidates’ profiles.

How to verify your O’level result

1. Visit buyresultsverificationcode.ng.

2. Enter your NIN and click “Verify NIN.”

3. Select the desired number of sittings and the appropriate examination body or bodies, then click “Continue.”

11. On the e-Facility dashboard, click “2026 UTME O’Level Upload.”

JAMB said the verification service would provide candidates with a convenient alternative, particularly during periods of high patronage and network challenges at CBT centres.

Benjamin said the initiative reflected the commitment of JAMB’s sixth Registrar, Prof Segun Aina, to a more customer-oriented and technology-driven service delivery system.

“The Board will continue to deploy technology and collaborate with relevant examination and government agencies to make its services simpler, safer and more accessible to candidates,” he said.

JAMB Profile Creation: The Mistakes 90% of UTME/DE Students Make

Published

on

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has cautioned prospective candidates against costly errors when creating their profiles for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination or Direct Entry registration.

JAMB stressed that one small mistake at the profile stage can create major problems later in the admission process.

The Board stated this in a new advisory video released under its “JAMB Explained” series and posted on its X handle on Wednesday.

The advisory, targeted at “fresh candidates”, highlighted errors in names and dates of birth as mistakes that could cause problems during the admission process.

“Before you create your JAMB profile to register for the UTME or Direct Entry, take a moment and carefully check to confirm that your name, date of birth, and any other details linked to the NIN are correct. Why?” the board said.

It explained that candidates’ details are obtained from their records with the National Identity Management Commission and are not created or edited by JAMB.

“That means if there’s any error with your name or date of birth, JAMB cannot change it after registration,” it said.

The board also cautioned candidates against assuming that obtaining an affidavit would automatically lead to the correction of their records with JAMB.

JAMB stressed the importance of ensuring that candidates’ identity details were accurate from the outset, noting that such information forms the basis of their records.

Prospective candidates are urged to ensure that their details were correct before proceeding with profile creation.

Millions Taken, Now Returned: FG’s Shocking Move On Textbook Fees

Published

on

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has announced a reduction in textbook assessment and ranking charges, directing refunds to publishers who had paid the previous higher rates.

In a statement signed by the Executive Secretary, Prof. Salisu Shehu, the Council confirmed that assessment fees have been cut from N2,000 to N1,500 per page, while ranking fees have been reduced from N1 million to N750,000 per textbook title.
Prof. Shehu emphasized that the revised charges take immediate effect and are designed to ease financial pressure on publishers and authors participating in the Federal Government’s new National Textbook Ranking System (NTRS).
He added that publishers who had already paid the old rates will receive refunds, with details of the refund process to be announced soon.
The NTRS, set to commence in September 2026, is part of the Ministry of Education’s reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The policy mandates that only textbooks assessed, approved, and ranked by NERDC will be permitted in Nigerian classrooms.
Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa explained that the initiative aims to eliminate substandard textbooks and ensure learners have access to high-quality, curriculum-compliant materials.
Beyond approval, every textbook will undergo rigorous national evaluation and ranking by expert committees before being recommended for schools.
The textbook ranking system joins other reforms such as nationwide learning assessments, revival of Unity College e-libraries, expansion of digital learning infrastructure, and measures to tackle learning poverty affecting an estimated 42 million Nigerian children.
Officials say the fee reduction and ranking policy will strengthen quality assurance, promote excellence in educational publishing, and guarantee that only the best instructional materials are used across Nigeria’s classrooms.
