Police Arrest Man In Enugu For Allegedly Faking Own Kidnap 

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 26 year old man, Chibuike Joshua Ugwuja, for allegedly faking his own kidnap and demanding ₦35 million from his family.

Spokesperson for the command, Daniel Ndukwe, said Ugwuja, a private security guard in Trans-Ekulu, left for work on November 22 but failed to return home.

Ndukwe said he later sent a Facebook message claiming he had been abducted by unknown persons who were demanding ransom.

Police investigations led to his father bringing him to the Trans-Ekulu Police Station on November 30. Ugwuja reportedly admitted staging the abduction, saying he wanted the ransom after being frustrated that his uncle could not buy him a tricycle.

He returned home on November 29 after his demands were not met.

The suspect remains in police custody and will be arraigned in court after further investigations.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the case as a “regrettable height of criminality” and commended the family for reporting it. The police urged the public to report suspected kidnappings and avoid paying ransoms.
