Strike: ASUU, FG Reach Agreement On Varsity Funding, Autonomy, Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government have reached key agreements on university autonomy, governance, funding, and staff welfare, according to a report signed by ASUU President Christopher Piwuna.

The deal affirms full university autonomy, merit-based appointment of vice-chancellors, and election of department heads, deans, and provosts. Governing council members must meet legal requirements and demonstrate integrity.

A needs-based budgeting system will cover critical recurrent and capital costs, while universities’ research and development will be strengthened through government and private sector support. Universities’ properties will be protected, and new funding mechanisms explored.

The pyramidal academic staff structure has been abolished, with promotions now based on research output and performance. Duty-free importation of books, lab equipment, and teaching tools is approved.

Implementation will include a monitoring unit at the National Universities Commission, an implementation committee, and automatic salary adjustments aligned with public sector wage reviews.
