2025 PPROs Conference: IGP Tasks Officers On Combating Misinformation

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Monday, declared open the 2025 Conference of Police Public Relations Officers in Abuja, charging them to step up strategic communication and counter misinformation more decisively.

The IGP described the conference as an essential platform for shaping national narratives and strengthening trust between the Police and the public.

He stressed that modern policing now hinges on transparency and effective communication, with PPROs serving as the institution’s frontline image managers.

Egbetokun raised concerns over the rising wave of misinformation, disinformation and perception-driven tensions, saying information management has become a core operational priority for the Nigeria Police Force.

He urged PPROs to “dominate the information space with truth, clarity and professionalism,” and to respond swiftly to misleading content before it gains traction.

The IGP also encouraged the use of social media as a tool for engagement but warned that narrative gaps must not be left for misinformation actors to exploit.

He expressed confidence that the conference would enhance professional capacity, sharpen communication strategies and project a stronger national image for the Force.

The event drew dignitaries from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the National Institute of Police Studies, the Police Community Relations Committee, and development partners including the UNDP, International Alert, GS-Foundation, the German Embassy, Moniepoint and CLEEN Foundation.
