NICOWA Facilitates Release of Six Inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Officers’ Wives Association (NICOWA), Enugu State Chapter, has facilitated the release of six inmates from custodial centres across the state.

The Coordinator of NICOWA, Mrs Peace Igwe, announced this at an event held by the group in Enugu over the weekend.

Igwe said the association secured the release of two inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Nsukka, and four from MSCC Enugu through payment of fines, restitution, and sponsorship of bail.

She added that the beneficiaries received cash support to start small businesses and reintegrated into the society.

The association also conducted a health screening for officers and their wives, alongside skill acquisition programmes for members of the host community.

Igwe said the initiatives reflected NICOWA’s commitment to welfare, rehabilitation, empowerment, and community development in line with the objectives of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Zone M, Mrs Prisca Oku, represented by Enugu Controller of Corrections, Mr Valins Obizue, commended NICOWA for its humanitarian work and urged members to continue supporting their husbands to enable effective service.

Dr Sunday Igwe, Deputy Controller of Corrections in-charge of Enugu Custodial Centre, described NICOWA as an “instrument of change,” praising its contributions to inmates, officers, and the broader NCoS community.

The event also featured the launch of NICOWA’s new uniform and the End-of-Year Get Together cake.
