Enugu South Targets Infrastructure, Service Delivery In ₦7.81bn Budget

The Enugu South Local Government Council has presented a ₦7.81 billion proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year, signalling a renewed push to consolidate infrastructure development, enhance security and strengthen grassroots governance.

Presenting the proposal to the Legislative Council, the Chairman, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Caleb Ani, described the spending plan as a “Budget of Disruptive Innovation and Consolidation,” aimed at completing ongoing projects, promoting fiscal discipline and deepening transparency in public administration.

Dr. Ani said the council’s projected revenue for 2026 stands at over ₦7.81 billion, with ₦240 million expected from internally generated revenue and more than ₦7.5 billion from statutory allocation.

He urged councillors to pass enabling bye-laws to improve revenue mobilisation and institutional efficiency.

Under the proposal, ₦4.07 billion, representing 52 per cent, is allocated to capital expenditure, while ₦3.74 billion, or 48 per cent, is set aside for recurrent spending.

The chairman expressed confidence that all capital projects would be delivered within the 2026 fiscal year.

The budget builds on key interventions already undertaken by the administration, including road construction and rehabilitation across communities such as Obeagu Uno – Amechi-Uno – Apkasha road, Ubaka/Achara Layout – Topland road, Amechi Uno – Umuogo road, Ndiagu road, Smart School road with standard drainages and bridges at Owo river and Ayo river which have improved local connectivity and commercial activity.

Security has also featured prominently, with the installation of solar-powered streetlights across major streets and residential areas to improve safety.

In addition, the council has supported improved electricity supply through the installation of 500KVA transformers in selected communities.

Institutional reforms form another pillar of the administration’s agenda. The refurbishment and equipment of the Legislative and Executicve chambers and the council secretariat has modernised the local government’s working environment and strengthened administrative efficiency.

Dr. Ani said the council has also invested in youth empowerment, skills development and education support programmes, which he described as critical to sustainable development at the grassroots.

Responding, the Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. John Okechukwu Egbo, assured the executive of expedited legislative consideration and timely passage of the proposal, pledging continued support for initiatives aimed at sustaining development in Enugu South.

The budget presentation attracted party leaders, Stakeholders, Civil Society Groups, members of NULGE as well as representatives of women and youth groups.
