The Enugu South Local Government Council in Enugu State has distributed 2,000 bags of rice to residents as part of a welfare intervention to cushion the impact of economic hardship during the Christmas season.

The council chairman, Hon. Caleb Ani, said the initiative was designed to support vulnerable members of the community and promote social inclusion, in line with the development agenda of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

Speaking at the distribution exercise, Mr Ani said local governments had a constitutional responsibility to prioritise the welfare of residents, particularly the less privileged, stressing that the programme reflected his administration’s commitment to grassroots governance.

“In the spirit of Christmas, it is important to share with the less privileged. At a time like this, these are the people the constitution entrusts to us as a local government to care for. What we have done today reflects our desire to always stand with our people and appreciate their support,” he said.

Also speaking, the council’s party chairman, Hon. Freedom Nnam, commended the initiative, describing it as consistent with the party’s commitment to community welfare and inclusive development.

He urged residents to continue supporting the local government, noting that several infrastructure and social projects were currently ongoing in the area.

“The chairman has done well to celebrate with the people who gave him their mandate, despite the numerous development projects being executed across the local government,” Hon. Nnam said.
