Over 200 Inmates In Enugu Pursuing University Degrees – NCoS

No fewer than 200 inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Enugu are currently enrolled in degree programmes at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

The Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the facility, Dr. Sunday Igwe, disclosed this to journalists on Monday, adding that most of the inmates are pursuing first degrees, while a smaller number are enrolled in master’s and doctorate programmes.

Dr. Igwe also revealed that over 102 inmates recently sat for the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams in preparation for university education.

He said the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), under Controller-General Sylvester Nwakuche, has prioritised education as part of its reformation efforts. “We don’t just keep inmates idling; we engage them in programmes that make their stay worthwhile.

Some arrive here unable to write their names, but leave with degrees in various courses,” he said.

Igwe added that, beyond formal education, inmates are also learning vocational skills such as tailoring, carpentry, and welding.

He thanked the Assistant Controller-General of NCoS in charge of Zone M, ACG Prisca Oku, and the Enugu State Controller of Corrections, Mr. Valins Obizue, for their support, and called on well-meaning individuals and organisations to partner with NCoS to sustain its reformation programmes.
