Eleven people have died following a tragic road accident on 9th Mile-Old Nsukka Road in Enugu, after a large tree collapsed onto a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and a Toyota Sienna car.

The Enugu State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, confirmed the incident, which occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday near Awhum Market in Awhum community. Heavy rainfall was cited as the cause of the tree’s collapse.

The accident involved 13 passengers, 11 females and two males. Eleven victims, including ten females and one male, were pronounced dead at the scene, despite the FRSC night rescue team arriving within 17 minutes.

The deceased were deposited at Ekochin Hospital Morgue, 9th Mile Corner, Enugu.

Residents assisted by using a chainsaw to remove the fallen tree, after which the Enugu State Traffic Management Agency (ESTMA) deployed a heavy-duty tow truck to clear the debris and restore traffic flow.
