Atiku Begs Tinubu: Nigerians Are Suffering, Reduce Fuel Price Now

Published

on

Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, yesterday appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the petroleum sector by reducing the prices of petrol and diesel in the overall interest of Nigerians.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Atiku said, “Bola Tinubu should not be ashamed to do what is necessary to lower the price of petrol simply because Atiku Abubakar proposed a government intervention.”

Speaking further, the former Vice President said, “For more than three years, that burden has travelled from the petrol station to the bus stop, from the bus stop to the market, and from the market to the family dining table.

“When petrol becomes expensive, transportation becomes expensive. When transportation becomes expensive, food becomes expensive. Farmers pay more to move produce. Traders pay more to stock their shops. Workers pay more to get to work. Businesses pay more for logistics and energy.

“In the end, the Nigerian family receives the bill. When government makes energy expensive, it makes life expensive.

“This is no longer an argument between economists. It is the daily reality of millions of Nigerians,” Atiku said.

According to Atiku, “These are the real tests of an economic policy.

“When I first argued that government should review its approach to the withdrawal of petrol subsidy and consider responsible intervention to bring down the cost of fuel, Mr. Bola Tinubu dismissed my proposal as demonstrating ‘serious ignorance’ of governance and the economy.

“My dear Bola, events since then have raised a simple question.

“Is the Nigeria Labour Congress also ignorant when it calls for urgent intervention to cushion workers from rising petrol prices?

“Are petroleum marketers ignorant when they call for policies that strengthen domestic refining and help moderate pump prices?

“Are Nigerian manufacturers ignorant when they warn that power-related expenses now consume more than half of operating costs?

“And are the millions of Nigerians crying out because they can no longer afford transportation, food and other basic necessities also ignorant?” he said.

“When workers, producers, marketers and ordinary families are all raising the alarm, government must listen.

“If everybody who questions your policy is ignorant, while only the President is presumed to be wise, then we have a leadership problem on our hands.

“Leadership requires the humility to confront the consequences of policy and the courage to change course,” he stressed.

The former Vice President said, “Across our factories, production costs are rising while unsold goods pile up in warehouses. Manufacturers struggle to keep producing; families struggle to afford what they produce.

“The goods are there. The need is there. What is missing is the purchasing power.

“Government celebrates GDP growth, higher revenues and bigger allocations. But Nigerians judge the economy by what their money can buy.

“If government receives more naira while the citizen’s naira buys less food, less fuel, less electricity and less transportation, then bigger government revenues mean little to the family struggling to survive.

“Economic growth must enter the home. It must enter the market basket. It must show up in the purchasing power of the worker.

“A government collecting more money while its citizens can afford less cannot declare victory on the strength of bigger numbers alone,” Atiku stated.

Speaking further, Atiku said, “Reform must ultimately be judged by what it does to the lives of the people. It should expand production, create opportunity and improve living standards. It cannot become an endless explanation for hardship.

“That is why I am calling on Mr. Bola Tinubu to act now. He has approximately eight months remaining in office. Bola, I want you to use those eight months to give Nigerians relief. And let me say this plainly: He should just take the idea. Rename it if he wishes. And even take the credit.

“What matters to me is that Nigerians pay less. A sensible idea does not become a bad idea because it came from your opponent. If responsible intervention can lower prices, intervene. If changing course can help Nigerian families, change course.

“And Nigerians do not need another elaborate palliative ceremony. Do not make life unbearable and then distribute bags of rice as evidence of compassion.

“Do not break a man’s legs, hand him crutches and demand applause for providing mobility. Emergency assistance has its place, but palliatives cannot substitute for sound economic policy.

“A bag of rice cannot repair an economy in which transportation costs outrun salaries. A cash transfer cannot permanently compensate a worker whose income is continuously eroded by energy costs. Palliatives manage pain. Good policy addresses the source of the pain.

“And as if the pressure on families were not enough, Nigerians are now being told that electricity subsidies will be phased out from 2027. Electricity is already expensive. Families are calculating how long their units will last. Small businesses are struggling to keep the lights on.

“Manufacturers are spending enormous amounts on electricity, diesel and alternative power simply to keep factories running.

“How much more can the Nigerian family carry? The barber needs electricity for his clippers. The tailor needs it for her machines.

“The frozen-food seller needs it to preserve her stock. The welder needs it for his equipment.

“The manufacturer needs it to keep the factory alive.

“The lesson of petrol must not be repeated with electricity.

“Do not remove first and think later. Do not impose the pain first and search for palliatives afterwards.

“When energy becomes unaffordable, everything becomes unaffordable.

“The President should know that eight months may sound short inside Aso Rock. But eight months is a very long time when you are living from hand to mouth.

“Use that time to reduce the burden on Nigerians. And if your government requires policy ideas or technical input on how to bring relief, I am prepared to make mine available.

“Nigerians do not have to wait for another administration before they benefit from an idea that can help them today. If you need the framework, I will provide it.

“Implement it under your government. Give it whatever name you choose.

“Take the credit. I ask for only one thing: Let Nigerians breathe.

“I am prepared to compete with you politically. But I will never compete with the welfare of the Nigerian people.

“The presidency may be contested. The wellbeing of Nigerians should never be.

“If elected, from May 29, 2027, I will introduce a transparent production subsidy for petroleum products refined in Nigeria and sold to Nigerians.

“Think of a Nigerian rice miller. Government helps lower the cost of milling so the rice can sell for less. More families can afford it. As sales grow, the miller buys more rice from Nigerian farmers and employs more Nigerians to process, package and transport it.

“That means cheaper rice for families, more business for farmers and more jobs for Nigerians.

“Our production subsidy will work the same way: government support must bring prices down. Only products confirmed to be refined in Nigeria will qualify. Imported products will not.

“The programme will have a fixed spending limit, National Assembly approval and independent audits.

“For the remaining eight months, President Tinubu should use every responsible instrument available to reduce the burden on Nigerians.

“Bola Tinubu should not be ashamed to do it because Atiku Abubakar proposed it.

“And if elected, I will work to build an economy in which growth is not merely announced in Abuja but felt in Nigerian homes.

“An economy where more production means more jobs.

“Where more revenue means better lives. Where economic growth means greater purchasing power.

“And where the Nigerian family can once again afford the basic necessities of life. Because ultimately, Nigerians do not live on statistics. They live on what their hard-earned money can buy,” he stated.

Oyo Traffic Alert! Major Roads Blocked For Youth Concert – See Diversion Routes

Published

on

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority, on Saturday, announced temporary traffic diversions and road closures ahead of the BOYE NATION/JAF Movement Concert scheduled to hold on Monday.

The board chairman, Major Adekoya Adesagba (retd.), announced this during a press briefing held at the authority’s headquarters in Ibadan, the state capital.

He explained that the measures were designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and safeguard motorists, pedestrians and other road users during the event, which is expected to attract a large number of attendees.

Adesagba said, “VIPs with valid event stickers or entry passes would park at Gate 2, while other guests and attendees would use the Recreation Field opposite Gate 3, Sabo, as the designated parking area. He added that PTS buses would be stationed at the recreation field to convey attendees to the concert venue.

“Gates 1 and 3 would be opened strictly to pedestrians, as vehicles would not be permitted to pass through the two gates.”

The chairman, therefore, advised attendees to make use of the designated parking facilities rather than attempting to drive directly to the venue.

He also announced the temporary closure of roads leading to the stadium to motorists and members of the public who have no business at the venue, urging them to use alternative routes during the period.

Adesagba further said, “The Danax en route Sabo Recreation Junction and Queen Cinema en route Eko Tedo would be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, Monday.”

The chairman appealed to motorists, commercial transport operators and residents within the affected areas to plan their journeys ahead and strictly obey traffic signs and directives from OYRTMA personnel deployed to strategic locations.

“The temporary traffic restrictions are necessary due to the expected influx of people to the concert. The measures are intended to minimise congestion and ensure the safety of all road users.”

He assured members of the public that the authority would deploy adequate personnel to monitor traffic movement and respond promptly to any challenge that might arise before, during and after the programme.

“Let me also use this period to appeal to members of the public to cooperate with OYRTMA and other security agencies. This compliance with the traffic arrangements would contribute to the safe and orderly movement of people and vehicles throughout the event,” the chairman assured.

The BOYE NATION/JAF Movement Concert is to mobilise and unify Oyo youths through music and entertainment while serving as the official platform for Boye Nation’s political declaration for the Allied Peoples Movement.

‎A resident, Auwal Kazagi Rogo, told Daily Trust that the incident happened on Friday around 7pm, September 18, 2026 in the Katsalle area of Rogo town.

He said residents rushed to the scene after hearing cries from Gausu’s wife, who claimed her husband had been “kidnapped slaughtered.”

‎“On reaching there, we saw that he was not slaughtered but hit on the head with an object. He fell and d!ed. There was even a sign of bite on his ear,” Kazagi said.

He added that police were immediately called and later evacuated the body for investigation.

‎Kazagi added that it was alleged that Gausu had recently been engaged with another woman, with plans to marry her as a second wife.

Elders had earlier intervened in the dispute, but tensions persisted.

‎The husband, on the other hand, was buried Saturday morning in Rogo according to Islamic rites.

Akume, represented by Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office (PEAO) Mrs. Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens, tasked members of the committee to work with urgency given the limited time before October 1.

He said emphasis will be on reflecting on the contributions, enduring legacies and sacrifices of the founding fathers and heroines, who worked for Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule.

He noted that the achievements recorded by Nigeria since independence were built on the foundation laid by the country’s nationalists, stressing the importance of remembering their sacrifices while reflecting on the nation’s journey since October 1, 1960.

The SGF added that the anniversary would also provide a window for the present administration to showcase its achievements and highlight efforts being undertaken to reposition the country through its reform initiatives, against the backdrop of the socio-economic challenges confronting the nation.

He said the programme of activities will commence with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 24, 2026; Juma’at Service on Friday, September 25; Church Service on Sunday, September 27, 2026 and Independence Day Public Lecture on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

President Bola Tinubu will make a nationwide broadcast on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Access Bank Shutdown Scare: Two Women Dragged To Court Over Viral False Alarm – See Details

Published

on

The Force Criminal Investigation Department (ForceCID), Alagbon Annex, Ikoyi, Lagos, has arraigned two women before the Federal High Court in Lagos over an alleged false publication claiming that Access Bank Plc would shut down its banking operations from September 23, 2026.

The defendants, Idorenyin Samuel Umoh and Fineness Monday Esu, were arraigned before Justice Akintayo Aluko on a three-count charge marked FHC/L/CR/773/2026.

The police alleged that the defendants conspired with other persons, said to be at large, to transmit a false publication concerning Access Bank through computer systems and networks.

According to the prosecution, the defendants allegedly circulated the publication on Facebook and WhatsApp on or about July 28, 2026, claiming that Access Bank would cease its banking operations and advising customers to close their accounts and withdraw their funds.

Prosecuting counsel, S. I. Nwafoaku, told the court that the defendants knowingly and intentionally circulated the alleged false information with the purpose of causing a breakdown of law and order.

The prosecution further alleged that the defendants published or reproduced a statement, rumour or report which they knew, or had reason to believe, was false and which was likely to cause fear and alarm and disturb public peace.

The alleged offences were said to contravene Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024, and Section 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act.

The defendants, however, denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to all three counts.

Following their pleas, Nwafoaku urged the court to adjourn the matter for trial and remand the defendants in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) pending the conclusion of the case.

The prosecution’s request for remand was opposed by the defendants’ lawyer, who orally applied for their bail.

Nwafoaku vehemently opposed the bail application and urged the court to grant the prosecution’s request for the defendants to remain in custody.

Ruling on the submissions, Justice Aluko directed the defendants to file formal bail applications before the next adjourned date.

The judge consequently ordered that the defendants be remanded pending the hearing of their bail applications.

The court fixed November 25, 2026, for the hearing of the case.

The arraignment followed allegations that the defendants’ online publications falsely represented that Access Bank would shut down its operations and encouraged customers to withdraw their funds.

The prosecution is expected to establish at trial that the publications were transmitted by the defendants and that they knew, or had reason to believe, that the information was false and capable of causing fear, alarm or disturbance of public peace.

The defendants’ pleas of not guilty mean that the allegations remain unproven, and the prosecution will be required to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Fireworks As Keyamo Roasts Atiku Over ‘Bola’ Comment – See What He Said That Has Got Everyone Talking

Published

on

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has criticised former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for repeatedly referring to President Bola Tinubu as “Bola” during a press conference on Friday.

Keyamo, in a post on his X handle on Friday, described Atiku’s reference to the President by his first name as “very disrespectful and discourteous”, saying the office of the President should be accorded dignity irrespective of political differences.

“The continuous reference to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT by His Excellency, ex Vice-President Atiku Abubakar in his Press Conference earlier today as ‘Bola’ is very disrespectful and discourteous,” Keyamo said.

“He should know better that no matter your differences with Mr. President, for the sake of the country, that office should be accorded all the dignity it deserves.”

Keyamo also accused Atiku of speaking from a position of personal grievance, saying, “The tone reeks of pain and bitterness in his heart.”

The minister further referred to Atiku’s recent claim about their ages, arguing that it was inconsistent for him to describe Tinubu as older than himself and simultaneously address him by his first name.

“After all, he made the outlandish claim the other day that Mr. President is older than himself. It is therefore a contradiction that he would also refer to an ‘elder’ by his first name,” Keyamo said.

Atiku had earlier urged Tinubu to adopt his proposal for government intervention to reduce petrol prices, saying the President could rename the idea and take credit for it if it would reduce the burden on Nigerians.

Atiku made the remarks at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, where he also called for measures to reduce the cost of petrol and warned against relying on palliatives to address rising living costs.

“Bola Tinubu should not be ashamed to do what is necessary to lower the price of petrol simply because Atiku Abubakar proposed a government intervention.

“He should just take the idea, rename it if he wishes, and even take the credit. What matters to me is that Nigerians pay less,” he said.

You Won’t Believe What Shettima Just Said About NAHCON’s 2026 Hajj – Nigerians Are Shouting

Published

on

Vice President Kashim Shettima has commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria for the improved coordination of the 2026 Hajj exercise, attributing the success of the pilgrimage to President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and decisive intervention.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima spoke in Abuja while receiving the comprehensive 2026 Hajj operations report from the NAHCON board, led by its Chairman, Ismail Abba Yusuf.

The vice president said NAHCON had demonstrated renewed vigour under its current management, stressing that the commission would remain crucial as global Hajj operations undergo a significant shift from a government-to-government to a business-to-business model.

The statement quoted Shettima as attributing the success of the 2026 exercise to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and decisive intervention at a critical time during the operations.

“And I must thank Mr President for decisively coming to the rescue of NAHCON. We want to thank him for the support that culminated in such a highly successful and seamless operation.”

Shettima also applauded the leadership of the NAHCON board, particularly its chairman, for “the confidence and capacity displayed in the last exercise,” urging the board to “continue in the same spirit.”

“I am very proud of the NAHCON chairman. He has shown capacity and exhibited a very high sense of professionalism and the willingness to carry on board members,” he added.

On the paradigm shift in Hajj operations from a government-to-government to a business-to-business model, the Vice President said the role of government remained critical to ensuring a hitch-free operation.

He noted that NAHCON would continue to play a vital role in championing the cause of a successful Hajj exercise.

Earlier, Yusuf thanked President Tinubu and Shettima for their unwavering executive backing, according to the statement.

The NAHCON chairman said their “critical, compassionate policy interventions, particularly in stabilizing foreign exchange access, securing the basic travelling allowance, and mitigating sudden spikes in aviation fuel significantly relieved the financial burden on a multitude of pilgrims.”

According to him, the timely support ensured that the sacred obligation remained accessible despite a highly challenging global economic and geopolitical climate.

Yusuf further noted that through the direct leadership and guidance of the Vice President, NAHCON was able to “harmonize collaboration across stakeholders to deliver what has been widely adjudged as a highly successful, seamless operation.”

He added that “from early arrangements and timely airlift to logistical management within MACA, Nigerian pilgrims were treated with utmost dignity.”

Also present at the report presentation were NAHCON’s Commissioner of Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance, AbdulRazak Aliu; Commissioner of Operations, Anofi Elegushi; and members representing the six geopolitical zones on the board of the commission, among others.
