Bandits on Sunday morning abducted eight worshippers an ECWA church in Omugo, Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

DAILY POST however gathered that three of the abductees have been rescued by joint security forces.

The attack occurred hours after the Coordinator, Joint Security Watch, Kwara South Senatorial District, Zubair Olaitan, issued an alert warning of imminent attack on some communities in Ifelodun, Irepodun and Isin LGAs.

Reacting to the development, the Kwara State Government has tasked the security forces and local vigilantes to ensure that the bandits who attacked the ECWA Church Omugo, are apprehended.

The government equally commended the security forces, forest guards and local vigilantes for the rescue of three of the abductees.

The government also condemned the “cowardly” targeting of religious places under any guise.

In a statement by Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, on Sunday, the Kwara State Government urged the security forces, forest guards, local vigilantes, and community members to continue to work together to end the menace.

“While commending the immediate response of the security forces and other stakeholders, we task them to ensure that the ongoing manhunt leads to the rescue of the remaining victims and arrest of the perpetrators,” the statement added.

It further commended the security forces, forest guards, and vigilantes for the appreciable progress made in combing of the forests, which has largely curtailed the activities of the criminals in the areas.

The government assured the people of its continuous commitment to work with security forces and community stakeholders to protect lives and property.

The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday said it had arrested a 21-year-old man, Alabi Anthony, for allegedly r@ping and killing a woman, Olaseni Veronica, at Iboropa community in Akoko North-East Local Government Area.

The suspect reportedly strangled the victim to death after the alleged sexu@l as$ault last week.

The Ondo Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement, said detectives acted on credible intelligence, tracking the deceased’s missing phone, which led to Anthony’s arrest.

“The suspect has confessed to the crime, admitting to having carnal knowledge of the victim and thereafter str@ngling her to death.

“The command condemns this heinous and inhumane act and assures the public that justice will be diligently pursued,” Jimoh stated.

He added that the case had been transferred to the command headquarters in Akure for further investigation and prosecution.

The police urged members of the public to report suspicious incidents promptly and avoid hasty conclusions in cases of sudden or unnatural deaths, noting that timely reporting greatly aids effective investigations.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Lagos to brief President Bola Tinubu on his on-the-spot assessment of the security situation in Maiduguri, Borno State, following his recent visit to the region.

Shettima’s visit comes after last Monday’s deadly suicide bombings at three Maiduguri locations, which claimed at least 23 lives and injured more than 100 others.

In a post on his verified X account on Sunday, Shettima said his visit to Maiduguri was undertaken at the instance of the President to engage with families and communities affected by recent tragic incidents in the state.

“The Vice President will brief the President on the outcome of his visit to Maiduguri to see families and communities affected by the tragic incidents in Borno State, as well as his on-the-spot assessment of the situation on the ground.

“Thereafter, Vice President @KashimSM is expected to lead serving governors on Sallah homage to the President,” the post read.

The coordinated attacks occurred around 7:02 p.m. on Monday, when suicide bombers detonated explosives almost simultaneously at the popular Maiduguri Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover area, and the security post at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Police put the death toll at 23, with 108 people sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

During his visit to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where many of the injured are receiving treatment on Wednesday, Shettima condemned the attacks as “barbaric” and stressed that no cause—religious or otherwise—justifies the killing of innocent civilians.

He assured victims and their families of the federal government’s full support through the National Emergency Management Agency, the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government.

“We will not rest on our laurels until full peace and sanity is restored in Borno, the Northeast, and the nation as a whole,” Shettima declared, vowing that those behind the attacks would be “decisively confronted.”

An Ogun State chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and convener of The Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, has decried the control of party leadership by presidents and governors, saying the trend undermines Nigeria’s democratic culture.

Showunmi warned that the practice has continued to weaken political institutions and fuel internal crises across parties in the country.

He said holding elected officials such as governors and the President accountable within party structures had become difficult because the same individuals now dictate party affairs.

The PDP chieftain, who spoke during a radio programme monitored in Abeokuta on Saturday, said the situation became entrenched during the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo, when the president was positioned as leader of the ruling party, with governors assuming similar dominance at the state level.

He explained that “this arrangement contradicts democratic norms, as political parties are not to be governed by the president or the governors, but by internal party officials and structures.

“In a proper democracy, candidates seek the support of party leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots members to secure tickets.

“After benefiting from that collective effort and arrangement when seeking elective offices, it becomes an anomaly for such candidates, once elected, to claim absolute control of the party.”

He described the development as a “major anathema” that has discouraged internal democracy, weakened party cohesion, and accelerated defections, as party members feel excluded once power is secured.

Showunmi further noted that prolonged conflicts between presidents and vice presidents, as well as governors and their deputies, have deepened mistrust within party hierarchies, making it difficult for deputy leaders to play meaningful roles in party administration.

Calling for reforms, the convener urged political stakeholders to separate executive authority from party management and rebuild parties as independent democratic institutions.

“Until Nigeria strengthens its parties beyond personalities and executive dominance, the cycle of mistrust, instability, and internal crisis will persist,” Showunmi warned.

A former deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections in Bayelsa State, Great MacIver, has expressed concerns over an impending implosion in the state chapter of the party.

The APC chieftain warned that the party may lose key stakeholders after the state, National Assembly and governorship primaries if nothing is done to address what he described as injustice in the way the party is being run.

MacIver raised the alarm in a statement released on Saturday, titled ‘Bayelsa APC Congresses: Going forward, a call to look inwards’.

He expressed concern over what he described as unresolved internal disparities within the Bayelsa APC, particularly following the involvement of Governor Douye Diri.

“Before His Excellency joined the APC in the state, there were clearly two political blocs that made up the party, with approximate population ratios of 95 per cent to 5 per cent,” he said.

He alleged that the current party structure favours a minority bloc, warning that such an imbalance could fuel dissatisfaction among members.

“After the entrance of His Excellency, only the smaller bloc is being carried along in the affairs of the party, leaving the greater percentage to their fate.

“This situation has the potential to build anger and dissatisfaction in our dear party,” MacIver stated.

He linked the development to recent defections within the party, cautioning that more could follow if urgent steps are not taken.

“The consequence of this has been the high level of defection we have witnessed recently, and we believe more may likely follow if we do not put our house in order,” he said.

MacIver further warned of possible fallout ahead of key political processes.

“If we do not pull together as a party, we may witness a situation where we will lose key stakeholders, especially after the State and National Assembly primaries, as well as the gubernatorial primaries,” he added.

Despite his concerns, the APC chieftain maintained that the party remains a strong contender in the 2027 elections but urged leaders to close ranks.

“We cannot afford to create situations or loopholes in our unity which will be exploited by other political interests in the state. We cannot afford to under-rate anyone,” he said.

Meanwhile, he declared support for the re-election bid of Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, describing the project as “non-negotiable.”

A political group, the Ekiti North Progressive Youth Alliance, has made a case for Ikole Local Government Area to produce the next senator representing Ekiti North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, citing equity, justice and fair play.

EKNPYA Coordinator, Tayelolu Ajayi, said the local government had not produced a senator since Nigeria’s return to democracy, adding that “equity, fairness and justice demand that the next senator for the senatorial district should come from Ikole Council area”.

Ajayi faulted an alleged plot by some politicians to return National Assembly tickets in the state to current occupants despite what he described as poor performance, warning that such a move would be resisted.

The EKNPYA coordinator, who spoke in a statement made available on Sunday at Ido Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti North Senatorial District, also rejected a consensus arrangement being considered for some National Assembly members from the district.

It will be recalled that all nine National Assembly seats from Ekiti State are currently occupied by members of the All Progressives Congress, including Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South), and Cyril Fasuyi (Ekiti North).

Ekiti North Senatorial District comprises five local government areas: Ikole, Oye, Ido/Osi, Moba and Ilejemeje.

Ajayi said, “Suppression of other aspirants in the name of consensus is a political fraud, which will be wholesomely rejected by voters.”

He added that presenting lawmakers as deserving of automatic return to the National Assembly was anti-democratic.

Making a case for Ikole, he said, “To entrench the doctrines of justice, equity and fairplay in the Ekiti North’s political equation, Ikole Local Government should be allowed to present a candidate for the senatorial seat, rather than angling on recycled leadership that often breeds mediocrity and hatred”.

The group urged stakeholders to embrace excellence, noting that the district has competent professionals capable of delivering development.

“At this critical juncture, equity, fairness, and strategic thinking must guide our decisions. It is time to give deliberate consideration to Ikole Local Government. By every standard of balance and justice, Ikole deserves a fair shot at the senatorial seat,” he said.

According to Ajayi, despite being the largest local government area in Ekiti North and second only to Ado Ekiti in the state, Ikole has yet to produce a senator since the return to democracy.

“This longstanding imbalance must now be addressed in the interest of unity, inclusiveness and sustainable progress. There must be true representation.

“True representation will bring strategic infrastructure projects, sustainable empowerment programmes with measurable scale, industrial and agricultural value-chain development, institutional presence that attracts federal investments and bold legislative advocacy translating into real benefits for constituents,” he stated.

The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded arrangements to formally welcome Dauda Lawal into the party.

This is contained in a statement issued in Gusau on Saturday by the State APC Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara had recently defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the statement, the formal reception, scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, will be attended by President Bola Tinubu, who will be represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“Shettima will be accompanied by the National Executives of the party as well as the immediate past governors of Zamfara and other major stakeholders of the party in the state.

“Similarly, other APC governors, National Assembly members and other top-notch members of the APC within and outside the state are expected to attend.

“The party has already strategised on how to mobilise supporters across the board in order to ensure a smooth and successful reception for the governor,” it added.

The statement further said that various committees had also been formed to ensure a hitch-free reception in the state.

“It could be recalled that the governor recently defected from his former political party, the PDP, to the APC.

“Therefore, the party appeals to all members, supporters and well-wishers to come out en masse and welcome our amiable President Bola Tinubu, who will be represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima,” it pleaded.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to direct the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee to publish the names and designations of all officials implicated in the alleged ₦200 trillion missing or unaccounted for from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, regardless of their social or political status.

SERAP urged him to direct the Committee to widely disclose details of the ongoing investigation, including audit reports, financial records, and official communications relied upon by the Committee, as well as the timelines for when any implicated officials should appear before it and for the conclusion of the investigation.

SERAP also urged him to direct the Public Accounts Committee to widely publish the complete records of the proceedings, including minutes, submissions, and evidence presented, to ensure transparency and enable Nigerians to independently scrutinise the evidence and process.

The Public Accounts Committee is investigating allegations that about ₦200 trillion is missing from NNPCL’s accounts between 2017 and 2023. The Committee has raised concerns over unreconciled figures and a lack of supporting documentation, yet several officials have failed to appear or provide satisfactory explanations.

In the letter dated 21 March 2026 and signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “Full disclosure of the ongoing investigation is essential to ensure transparency and accountability, prevent political interference, and allow Nigerians to independently scrutinise the facts and investigation.”

SERAP said, “The allegations that ₦200 trillion is missing or unaccounted for, whether fully accurate or partly overstated, can only be taken seriously by Nigerians if the Senate is fully transparent in its ongoing investigation regarding the credibility, plausibility, and accuracy of the claims.”

According to SERAP, “Transparency regarding the ongoing investigation would prevent any perception of a cover-up or political compromise, and ensure that the facts are clearly established.”

The letter, read in part, “Providing complete and verifiable information would allow the public and oversight institutions to assess the situation objectively and determine where the truth lies regarding the allegations.

“The magnitude of the sum, combined with the NNPCL’s history of opaque practices, underscores the urgency of a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.

“Allowing these allegations to be ignored, delayed, or politicized risks normalizing impunity and diminishes the public’s right to know how national wealth is being managed.

“There is a legitimate public interest in ensuring that all discrepancies are fully examined and that those responsible are identified and held to account, as part of a broader effort to strengthen governance and protect the nation’s economic future.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and the Senate to comply with our request in the public interest.

“The ongoing probe by the Public Accounts Committee into the alleged missing ₦200 trillion from the NNPCL has been dragging for an extended period, with repeated delays in the appearance of officials and slow progress in reconciling the disputed figures.

“Such delays undermine public confidence in the investigative process and create the risk of key evidence being lost or distorted.

“It is imperative that the Committee promptly concludes its investigation in a timely and transparent manner, with clear timelines for the appearance of implicated individuals and the publication of findings, so that accountability is achieved and Nigerians are able to fully understand the outcome.

“The NNPCL has long operated with significant opacity in its financial and operational activities, which has repeatedly limited public oversight and created fertile ground for corruption, mismanagement or misreporting.

“Transparency in this regard would help build public confidence that the investigation is not being shaped by political considerations or undue influence.

“Despite repeated invitations and ultimatums issued by the committee, NNPCL and several of the officials identified in the audit queries have reportedly failed to appear before the panel or provide comprehensive explanations addressing the concerns raised.

“This non-compliance has heightened tensions between the legislature and the NNPCL, and raised concerns and unresolved issues about transparency and accountability in the management of the country’s natural wealth and resources.”

Crude oil prices have surged to above $112 per barrel as the
Iran-United States-Israel war escalation entered day 21 on Saturday amid a
surge in domestic petrol prices in Nigeria.

Brent crude rose by 3.26 percent on a day-to-day basis to
$112.2 per barrel, and West Texas Intermediate crude blend increased by 2.80
percent to $98.23 per barrel as of filing the report.

The crude oil price upsurge comes as the US, Israel, and
Iran have not been able to agree on a ceasefire deal.

to between N1,331 and N1,430 per liter in Abuja.
