The Enugu State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointments of Charles Egumgbe and Osinachi Nnajieze as commissioners.

Their confirmation followed a request from Governor Peter Mbah, conveyed in a letter read on the floor of the House, asking lawmakers to screen and clear the nominees.

Mr Egumgbe, a legal practitioner, has previously served as a commissioner in the state on three occasions.

During his screening, he told lawmakers that he had held leadership positions in the Ministries of Commerce and Industry, Water Resources, and Chieftaincy Matters, where he contributed to public service and governance.

Mr Nnajieze, also a legal practitioner and the Senior Special Adviser to the governor on Legal Matters, highlighted his experience in legislative and legal reforms. He disclosed that he facilitated 33 executive bills within two years in office.

He said that if appointed as Commissioner for Justice, he would prioritise the speedy dispensation of justice, proposing a rehabilitation-based approach for individuals involved in minor offences rather than prolonged detention in correctional facilities.

Mr Nnajieze also pledged to recommend the appointment of judicial officers with proven integrity to curb the abuse of court orders.

Meanwhile, the Assembly also passed the Enugu State Criminal Code Bill.

The Minority Leader, Iloabuchi Aniagu, said the bill would strengthen the state’s legal framework in tackling offences such as human trafficking, kidnapping and terrorism.

He explained that the legislation clearly defines offences and corresponding punishments, adding that it would help curb criminal activities across the state.

Also contributing, Chima Obieze, who represents Ezeagu Constituency, said the bill would address inefficiencies within Nigeria’s justice system and improve procedures for handling criminal matters.
