Enugu: Rotary, Partners Offer Free Medical Services To Ugwuaji Residents

More than 100 residents of Ugwuaji Awkunanaw autonomous community in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State have benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Rotary Club of New Haven.

The outreach, held on Saturday at Community Primary School, Eke Ugwuaji, was organised in partnership with the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), and the Rotaract Club of New Haven.

Speaking at the event, the president of the Rotary Club of New Haven, Adaze Nwokolo, said the initiative was part of Rotary International’s disease prevention and treatment focus, aimed at improving access to basic healthcare for vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

She said the intervention was designed to support residents who could not afford routine medical checks and preventive healthcare services.

Health professionals at the outreach provided medical education and screenings focused on disease prevention and early detection. Services included training on self-breast examination and cancer prevention, clinical breast examinations, and screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and hepatitis B and C.

According to the organisers, the programme sought to promote early diagnosis and encourage individuals to take greater responsibility for their health.

The outreach, themed “My Health, My Priority,” underscored the importance of preventive healthcare in underserved communities where access to routine medical services remains limited.

The traditional ruler of Ugwuaji Awkunanaw autonomous community, Igwe Chinedu Nyia Nwobodo, commended the organisers for what he described as a timely intervention, urging residents to take advantage of the screenings and follow medical advice.

Rotary representatives said the outreach formed part of the organisation’s broader humanitarian commitment to disease prevention and treatment, adding that similar interventions would continue in collaboration with health professionals and community leaders.
