The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 11 persons following a fatal road accident along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC Enugu State Command, Franklin Agbakoba, disclosed this to journalists in Enugu on Saturday.
He said the accident occurred at about 6:46 p.m. near the FRSC Ozalla Unit Command.
According to Agbakoba, a total of 36 persons were involved in the collision between a commercial Toyota Coaster bus and an articulated Mercedes-Benz trailer.
“Eleven persons lost their lives in the crash, comprising 10 males and one female,” he said.
He added that seven persons, three males and four females sustained injuries and were taken to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, for treatment.
“The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the UNTH morgue,” he stated.
Agbakoba noted that FRSC personnel promptly cleared the obstruction caused by the accident, restoring the free flow of traffic along the affected axis.
Preliminary investigations, he said, indicate Route Traffic Violation (RTV) and Loss of Control (LOC) as possible causes of the crash.
He commended officers and marshals of the FRSC Ozalla Unit Command for their swift response, rescue operations, and evacuation of victims.
Further details, he added, would be made available as investigations continue.
