Niger, FG Speed Up Return of Over 500,000 Displaced Borgu Residents

The Niger State Government and Federal Government are fast-tracking the safe return and resettlement of more than 500,000 people displaced from Borgu Local Government Area due to persistent insecurity.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago announced the accelerated efforts during a presidential initiative in Borgu, where food, nutritional supplies, and essential drugs were distributed to vulnerable residents as urgent relief.

The displaced—mostly indigenes of Borgu are currently spread across Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, and Kaduna states, the Federal Capital Territory, and even Benin Republic.

“Frantic efforts are underway to bring these people home soon,” Governor Bago said. “We’re collaborating closely with the federal government and partners to make it happen.”

He noted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to clear and secure the Borgu National Park, establishing permanent bases for security agencies to address the criminal threats that have uprooted communities and crippled livelihoods.

I ask our communities to remain patient as governments work tirelessly for peace and safety.”

Minister of State for Agriculture Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi praised the state’s peace restoration efforts in Borgu Emirate and reaffirmed federal backing for these humanitarian drives.

Local leaders, including Borgu LGA Chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, and Jikadan Borgu expressed gratitude to both governments.

They said the relief items would greatly alleviate hardship for families who lost farms and livelihoods.The distribution event included symbolic handovers to selected beneficiaries across the Borgu Kingdom, providing immediate aid while broader security and resettlement plans advance toward lasting peace and homecoming.
