Obi Reaffirms ADC Membership, Calls for National Unity At Enugu Meeting

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging Nigerians to unite across political, ethnic and religious lines to address the country’s worsening socio-economic challenges and democratic decline.

Obi spoke at a coalition meeting held at the Nike Lake Hotel in Enugu, attended by prominent political leaders, former governors, legislators, youth and women leaders from across the country.

He described Nigeria as being at a “defining moment,” saying the country must embark on a renewed struggle for true independence anchored on justice, equality and national unity.

He accused a small political elite of capturing state institutions and undermining democratic norms, warning that any attempt to rig future elections would be resisted through lawful means.

The former Anambra State governor called for urgent electoral reforms, including strengthening the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), strict adherence to electoral laws and transparent transmission of results, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Citing widespread poverty, unemployment, insecurity and disunity, Obi said Nigeria’s core problem was not a lack of resources but leadership failure and deliberate division by the political class.

He criticised current fiscal and tax policies, arguing that taxation should improve citizens’ welfare rather than deepen poverty.

The event was anchored by Senator Victor Umeh, who announced that Obi and other Labour Party members had formally resigned to join the ADC.

Former Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha, moved a motion urging National Assembly members present to follow Obi into the party, which was unanimously adopted.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe also announced his resignation from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to join the ADC, while several other leaders publicly pledged loyalty to Obi.

ADC National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark, said the party was founded on principles of equality, justice and internal democracy, pledging inclusive and productive leadership.

Several youth and women leaders described Obi as best positioned to lead Nigeria, while speakers at the event consistently referred to him as the leader of the emerging coalition.

The meeting ended with widespread endorsements from former governors, legislators and civil society groups, signalling a growing political realignment around the ADC and Obi ahead of future elections.
