Prohibiting Open Grazing In The South Is Like Northern Governors Banning Spare Parts – FG Warns

The Federal Government has warned the governors of the Southern region against ban on open grazing in the region.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, appearing on Channels Television’s Politics on Wednesday  described the position of the Southern Governors as “indeed dangerous.”

According to the Attorney General, the Governors have no right to prohibit the liberty and freedom of movement of any Nigerian, adding that their declaration was as good as northern Governors coming out to ban spare parts trading in the North.

Aprokorepublic recalls that Governors from the Southern Region had met in Asaba, Delta State to proffer solutions to increasing security issues in the country.

The Governors condemned open grazing and movement of cattle from the Northern Region to the South.

The governors further called for a national conference to determine national questions bothering on the nature of Nigeria’s federalism and federal character in national appointments, among other issues.

But Malami insisted that the ban on open grazing does not hold water, adding that the Governors must first approach the National Assembly to seek constitution amendments in that respect, adding that even trying to prohibit the freedom of a Nigerian with or without a constitutional backing, is a dangerous position.

“Well, it is about constitutionality. Within the context of the freedoms expressed in our constitution…enshrined in our constitution, can you deny the rights of a Nigerian? For example, it is as good as saying, maybe, the northern governors coming together to say that they prohibit spare parts trading in the North. Does it hold water? He said.

“Does it hold water for a northern governors to come out saying they now prohibit spear parts trading in the North? Look, if you are talking about a constitutionally guaranteed rights, it is to go back to ensure the constitution is amended.

“The freedom of movement, among others, is established in the constitution.

“If by an inch you want to have any compromise over it, the better approach is to go back to the national [and sponsor a motion for] open grazing to be prohibited and see whether you will have the desired support for constitutional amendment in that respect but it is indeed a dangerous position for any Governor in Nigeria to think that he can bring about any compromise…any compromise on the freedom and liberty and freedom of individuals to move around.”

EKWUNIFE FACILITATES BUSINESS GRANTS FOR 1000 BENEFICIARIES

Over 1000 beneficiaries have been credited in another batch of intervention funds cash transfers facilitated by the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife as part of her continuous efforts to empower the people of the constituency and assist them in their businesses.

The cash transfers began to drop on the bank accounts of the beneficiaries who had applied at the constituency office on Friday, June 18, 2021. We therefore use this opportunity to urge constituents who had applied for intervention funds from the office to always check their phones regularly for acceptance messages, and subsequently expect the receipt of funds. Those who have taken delivery of the funds should report to the office for documentation and further assistance.

Constituents are at liberty to visit the Intervention Funds and Benefits Department of the Liaison Office, located at Senator Uche Ekwunife Centre, Opposite Udoka Housing Estate Awka to provide details which would assist the office in facilitating the various Federal Government’s intervention funds/benefits for them.

Senator Ekwunife’s resolve to ameliorate the sufferings of the people by offering a representation that is visible, impactful and purposeful remains unflinching. More beneficiaries are expected to be captured in the ongoing programme in the coming weeks.

Boko Haram Gets New Commanders

Published

on

Nigeria’s Boko Haram jihadist group has confirmed the death of its chief Abubakar Shekau, who sources say died during infighting with a rival Islamic State-allied faction, according to a video message from its presumed new commander.

In the short video in Arabic, top Boko Haram commander Bakura Modu, also known as Sahaba, urged his faction’s commanders to remain loyal despite the loss of their historic commander.

Shekau’s death was seen a major shift in Nigeria’s conflict, though Islamic State in West Africa Province or ISWAP has recently emerged as the dominant force in the more than decade-long Islamist insurgency in the country’s northeast.

The video, provided to AFP by a source close to Boko Haram and confirmed to be Bakura Modu by another local source, illustrates that jihadist infighting is far from over in Africa’s most populous nation.

Shekau, who gained notoriety after kidnapping nearly 300 schoolgirls in 2014, killed himself last month rather than surrender after IS-allied rivals attacked his base camp in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state, security sources said.
