Save Lives First, Enforce Later – FRSC Boss Warns Against Misconduct

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has declared that the Corps exists primarily to save lives and property, insisting that traffic enforcement must never overshadow integrity and public trust.

Speaking on Wednesday in Enugu during a sensitisation programme on discipline and command structure, Mohammed represented by the Commandant of FRSC Academy, Udi, Assistant Corps Marshal Uche Chukwurah warned against growing cases of misconduct within field commands.

“Our mandate supersedes mere enforcement of traffic laws,” he said, stressing that the authority of the Corps derives from public confidence.

He expressed concern over what he described as a disturbing decline in discipline and professionalism, citing reports of misconduct, unethical practices, abuse of authority, extortion and reckless enforcement.

“Such behaviours are unacceptable. They violate our regulations, betray our training and erode the trust built over decades,” he said.

According to him, every act of unprofessional conduct damages the image of disciplined personnel and weakens the Corps’ credibility.

Mohammed said senior officers deployed to various commands were tasked with restoring discipline, reinforcing leadership accountability and strengthening effective command and control.

“Discipline is not punishment; discipline is protection for our reputation, our careers and the lives of Nigerians who depend on us daily,” he added.

In his remarks, Zonal Commander, Assistant Corps Marshal Anthony Oko, urged personnel to uphold the standards set by the Corps’ founding fathers.

Earlier, the Enugu Sector Commander, Franklin Agbakoba, acknowledged reports of misconduct but said the command had taken corrective steps, including directing officers to sign a bond of good conduct and convening a sector-wide meeting to reinforce ethical standards.

He assured the Corps leadership of the command’s renewed commitment to professionalism and integrity.
