Tinubu Directs Governors To Comply With Supreme Court, Release LG Allocations

President Bola Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s 36 state governors to release local government allocations directly to councils in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling.

He emphasized that local government autonomy must be accompanied by a funded mandate.

Speaking at the 14th APC National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, Tinubu also reaffirmed his commitment to establishing state police to address the country’s rising insecurity, telling governors he had assured the United States and European Union of the plan.

“You must yield and continue to promote, tolerate and be flexible, get involved in whatever is happening in your states, up to the local government level,” Tinubu said. “Local government autonomy is and must be effective. There is no autonomy without funded mandate. We will give them their money directly. That’s the truth. That’s compliance with the Supreme Court. Take leadership seriously.”

The President commiserated with the Bayelsa State government over the death of Deputy Governor and called for increased inclusion of women in party leadership.

Earlier, APC national chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda highlighted the party’s growing national influence, citing recent high-profile defections, an electronic membership registration drive, and plans for a new national secretariat in Abuja.

He described the APC as enjoying an “overwhelming majority” in both chambers of the National Assembly.

Notable defectors present at the caucus included Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Enugu Governor Peter Mbah, Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri, Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, and Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas.

The caucus, a high-level APC strategic meeting, brought together the President, Vice President, national chairman, governors, and other key stakeholders to align on political and organizational matters ahead of party congresses and the 2026 national convention.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas stressed the need for collaboration within the party and respect for governors as state leaders.
