Two Dead, Nine Injured In Multiple Crash On Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of two persons in a multiple road crash involving 11 vehicles along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday.

Sector Commander of the FRSC in Enugu State, Franklin Agbakoba, disclosed this to journalists shortly after rescue operations were concluded by operatives of the Corps at the scene of the incident.

Agbakoba said nine male occupants sustained varying degrees of injury in the crash, which involved 30 persons—26 men and four women.

He explained that the accident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. on the Port Harcourt–bound lane of the expressway, specifically around the New Garki axis in Enugu State.

According to him, the crash involved four trucks, two trailers, a Sienna vehicle, a tipper, a Hiace bus, a mini-bus and a Jeep.

He said FRSC personnel from the Ozalla Unit Command, who were stationed close to the scene, arrived within 10 minutes of the incident to begin rescue operations.

“They were later joined by other nearby units and personnel from sister security agencies,” Agbakoba said.

The injured victims were taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu and the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ozalla by the FRSC Zebra 32 Ambulance team deployed along the expressway.

He added that the crashed vehicles and debris were cleared from the road by FRSC officials working alongside the Enugu State Traffic Management Authority (ESTMA) tow truck team, while the Ozalla Unit Commander, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ozalla and military personnel coordinated the operation.

Agbakoba identified the major factors responsible for the crash as speed violation, route violation and loss of control.
