Udenu Council Boss Inaugurates Six Solar-Powered Boreholes, Secures Endorsement

The Executive Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Aka Eze Aka, has inaugurated six solar-powered boreholes across political wards in the council area in a move aimed at addressing water scarcity and improving public health at the grassroots.

The projects form part of the local government’s community-based development agenda, in line with its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and improved living standards.

The boreholes are located at Smart School Obollo Eke; Orba Ward 1; Orba Ward 2; Ezimo; Imilike; and Udunedem wards.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the council chairman said the intervention aligns with the development vision of the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, whom he credited with prioritising people-oriented projects across the state.

According to Aka Eze Aka, the solar-powered facilities are designed as a long-term and environmentally sustainable solution to water challenges in rural communities.

He noted that the initiative would reduce residents’ dependence on unsafe water sources and eliminate the burden of long-distance treks in search of water, particularly for women and children.

The chairman explained that each borehole is powered by solar energy to ensure uninterrupted, round-the-clock operation. He added that the installations were constructed with durable components capable of lasting up to 50 years if properly maintained.

Hon. Aka Eze Aka urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities by safeguarding them against vandalism and misuse.

“Government alone cannot sustain development without community partnership,” he said, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving public assets.

Responding on behalf of the Orba people, the traditional ruler of Orba, Igwe Ambrose Nwoye, commended the council chairman for what he described as exemplary leadership and impactful governance.

He also expressed appreciation to Governor Peter Mbah for extending development projects to rural communities.

Similarly, the councillor representing Orba Ward 1, Hon. Eze Collins Izuchukwu, described the borehole project as timely and transformative, noting that access to potable water would significantly improve sanitation and quality of life in the area.

A former caretaker council chairman and prominent indigene of Ezimo, Hon. Onyedikachi Ugwu, described the council boss as an intelligent, articulate, and people-centred leader.

Hon. Ugwu also announced that the people of Ezimo had endorsed the council chairman for a second term.

Also, the President General (PG) of Ifuama Umundu Town Union, Chief Raymond Aroh, commended the council boss for addressing a major problem in the community.

He said, “For years, the quest for clean, potable water has been one of our most pressing challenges.

“Our women and children have trudged long distances in search of this basic necessity of life. It is a narrative that has defined our daily existence for far too long. But today, that story changes.”he said.

The council chairman was accompanied at the inauguration by senior members of the council, including the Deputy Chairman, Lady Anthonia Odoh.
