Don’t worsen Nnamdi Kanu’s problems, Obidigbo urges Igbo politicians

Frontline Industrialist and Philanthropist, Dr. Chike Obidigbo, has urged politicians, especially those from the South-East, against compounding the travails of the Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Obidigbo expressed regret that some Igbo political elites are going about the ongoing popular demand for the release of the embattled IPOB leader the wrong way, stressing that the overzealous politicians are acting out of ignorance and mostly in self-aggrandisement.

In a statement made available to journalists in Enugu, Sunday, Obidigbo, who is the President of Osisioma Foundation, noted that the delicate nature of Kanu’s incarceration requires quiet diplomacy to achieve political solution, without politicising the young man’s release, the way they are going about it.

While identifying the salient complications around the IPOB Leader’s forceful rendition and consequent incarceration, the Anambra-born elder statesman said Britain’s loud silence about Kanu’s predicament raises a large red flag.

Part of the statement reads: “I woke up this morning with a very heavy heart. I am constrained to say that I am not comfortable with the way and manner our political elites are going about their request for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“The sense I make of the cheap scramble by Igbo politicians to be identified in the growing calls for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom from prolonged and unjust incarceration is that they are merely playing to the gallery.

“It is obvious that President Bola Tinubu is not entirely the one holding Nnamdi Kanu. It was not even former President Muhammadu Buhari nor his erstwhile Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami (SAN). All the AGFs, including the current one are mere legal officers for the government.

“However, Kanu’s matter is a security issue, which requires the involvement of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. The President may not have absolute power to release Kanu although he has the power to influence things if he so wishes.”

Obidigbo further disclosed that the other powerful elephant in the room blocking Nnamdi Kanu’s freedom is the British Government, stressing that Kanu acted against British economic interest in Nigeria.

He remarked that this economic interest, which Kanu’s agitation was negatively affecting, had been enriching the government and people of Britain, over several centuries, saying that “although the fact is well known every Nigerian elite, most are simply pretentious”.

“Everything that Kanu said or did were done in Britain, being a British citizen. But, they could not afford to arrest him on British soil, because of obvious and potential backlash.

“What Britain did was to join in the international conspiracy to lure Kanu to Kenya, knowing that Africans lack integrity and respect for laws.

“They then got him kidnapped in Kenya and forcibly and illegally renditioned him to Nigeria. They could not have done that in any other part of the world, outside of Africa, without extreme repercussions and consequences. Such can only happen in Africa, and they knew that much.

“The British High Commissioner in Nigeria showed no interest in at least speaking up against the violent kidnap and rendition of her citizen. All the Embassy was interested was to hear Kanu renounce his dream of a Biafra, probably with a promise never to support any such agitation in future,” he said.

The Industrialist said Britain’s double standards and hypocrisy betrays their long term destabilising designs against Nigeria’s socio-economic prosperity and independence.

According to Obidigbo, here was the same Britain that frustrated in 1984 the forceful abduction and return to Nigeria of Alhaji Umaru Dikko, who was not even a British citizen at the time, but merely an asylum seeker in Britain.

“Britain continues to see Nigeria as their own fertile farm land for free economic exploitation and political manipulation. They have no wish to relax their stranglehold, not now, not in the near future.

“But then, African youths are gradually coming up to challenge all the existing frustrations, deprivations, and blatant exclusion from enjoying the natural endowments of their own countries,” he said.

He noted that what the British may not reckon with easily is that the Biafra agitation had since gone beyond Nnamdi Kanu, because other elements had keyed into the struggle, thereby fuelling the agitation way beyond even Kanu’s own expectations.

Obidigbo, therefore, said that restraining Kanu, as it is erroneously believed by his captors, had little chances of disrupting the movement he founded.

“It seems that all that is hindering the actualisation of the dream Biafra is the lack of involvement of the elites- excluding imposed leaders and greedy political elites- in the struggle.

“Genuine efforts to free Kanu should be directed at the NSA as well as the Ambassadors of Britain, USA and Ambassadors of some well-meaning, and Influential countries like China, Russia, etc.

“Without the buy in of those powerful nations, the struggle will surely continue, until Biafra gets the referendum that IPOB has been demanding, however they get it.

“If Kanu is released on political grounds, without holding a referendum as IPOB demand, the struggle will most likely continue, thereby rendering elusive or delaying further the much sought after peace.”

After Oko Hostel Tragedy, Sen. Uche Ekwunife Calls for Tougher Building Safety Enforcement (See details)

Published

on

The Most Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic collapse of a student hostel in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, which claimed lives and left several others injured.

In a statement issued following the incident, Senator Ekwunife extended her heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, describing the loss of lives as a painful tragedy for the bereaved families, the Oko community, and Anambra State as a whole.

She also expressed concern for those who survived the collapse and are currently receiving medical treatment, praying for their quick and complete recovery.

While commending the efforts of rescue workers, security personnel, healthcare providers, volunteers, and community members involved in the emergency response, the former senator urged them to sustain the search-and-rescue operation until every missing person is accounted for.

Senator Ekwunife further called on the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the cause of the building collapse. She stressed that establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident is crucial not only for ensuring accountability but also for preventing similar tragedies in the future.

She also advocated stricter monitoring and enforcement of building regulations across Anambra State, emphasizing that adherence to approved construction standards and professional guidelines must be treated as a critical public safety responsibility rather than a mere administrative requirement.

According to her, stronger enforcement by relevant regulatory agencies would significantly reduce the risk of building failures and help safeguard lives and property.

Senator Ekwunife concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, divine comfort for their grieving families, and speedy healing for those injured in the unfortunate incident.

Shock Proposal? Senator Pushes Bill to Recognize Native Doctors’ Role in Connecting With Ancestors

Published

on

Garba Maidoki, senator representing Kebbi south, has called for the inclusion of traditional medicine in a bill seeking to overhaul
Nigeria’s food and drug regulatory framework.

He argues that indigenous healing practices remain relevant, particularly in rural communities.

The senator spoke on Tuesday during debate on a bill seeking to repeal the Food, Drug and Related Products (Registration, Etc.) Act and the
Food and Drug Act, and replace them with a single legal framework for regulating food, medicines and other products that affect public health.

‘MOST RURAL DWELLERS RELY ON TRADITIONAL MEDICINE’

Speaking in support of the bill sponsored by Sadiq Umar, senator representing Kwara north, Maidoki said the legislation should also
recognise traditional medicine.

“I rise to also support this motion ably sponsored by Senator Suleiman Sadiq. This motion, as my colleague said, is apt, is timely,
and is in good faith to modernise the practice of food and drug registration in Nigeria,” he said.

“But Mr. President, I want to bring to your attention that even though this is modernised, we have not seen anything on this bill
concerning traditional medicine.

“Concerning traditional medicine, sir, most of our rural dwellers, most of them rely mostly on this traditional medicine.

“And I think it is high time that we have a law that also allows traditional medicine to be implemented.

“Holistically, if this is done, we will also reduce the cost of importation of drugs from foreign nations, and we will rely mostly on our
own indigenous herbs and medication by our own native doctors.”

Maidoki said incorporating traditional medicine into the legal framework would reduce dependence on imported medicines.

He added that the bill’s sponsor, a pharmacist, should work towards integrating traditional practitioners into the country’s healthcare
system.

“I think if this is done, the pharmacist Senator Suleiman will be able to incorporate these people and make this holistic,” he said.

The lawmaker said some ailments are better treated with herbal remedies than orthodox medicine.

“Even some of us that are senators, sometimes we rely, we go to herbal medicine to help us with one ailment or the other, which sometimes
the modern medicine has no answer. Like if your ancestors decide to talk to you, you need a native doctor to intercede on your behalf,” he added.

Maidoki’s remarks elicited laughter in the senate chamber.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio responded in a light-hearted manner.

“Thank you, Distinguished Senator Garba. The native doctor will intercede between you and the ancestor,” he said.

“It’s actually baffling that this was part of the African religion, but when the white people came, they now told us that we don’t need
our ancestors, but I think from what you are saying, you are still using your ancestors.”

The bill later passed second reading after receiving the support of lawmakers.

If enacted, the legislation will repeal two existing food and drug laws and establish a unified regulatory framework covering food,
medicines, vaccines, medical devices and other products that affect public health.

A New Era? US and Saudi Arabia Near Landmark 30-Year Nuclear Agreement

Published

on

The United States is set to announce a landmark 30-year nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, aimed at establishing a civilian nuclear program in the kingdom, according to reports from US media outlets.

The deal, expected to be unveiled Wednesday, comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The New York Times cited US officials confirming that the Trump administration would formally sign and announce the agreement, which is projected to generate billions of dollars for the US nuclear industry.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the pact could allow US companies to build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia.
However, the proposal has drawn opposition from US lawmakers across party lines and Israeli officials, who fear the program could be diverted toward developing nuclear weapons.
While the deal will be submitted to Congress, its approval is not required for implementation. Washington has also sought to link the nuclear agreement to broader strategic goals, including Saudi Arabia’s potential normalization of ties with Israel and a US-Saudi defense pact.
Saudi Arabia has long insisted on its right to pursue a civilian nuclear program, similar to the UAE, which signed a nuclear deal with Washington in 2009 but does not enrich uranium.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in Manila, declined to confirm the deal but assured that Washington would not enter any agreement that risks nuclear proliferation.
The announcement comes as the US war with Iran continues to destabilize the region, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels threatening to blockade Saudi ports, a move that could disrupt global oil supplies.

Big Change Ahead? FG Set to Replace Multiple Emergency Lines with Just One Number

Published

on

The Federal Government has announced plans to implement 112 as Nigeria’s nationwide emergency telephone number, aiming to unify and strengthen the country’s emergency response system.

The initiative was disclosed in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), following a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the Presidential Villa.

The move comes days after the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Shettima, approved the adoption of 112 across all levels of government and agencies.

Shettima directed the NCC to develop a roadmap for implementation and to collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to improve coordination nationwide.

“The Vice President assured the delegation that the project would be sustained, with funding mobilised through NEC and private sector support,” the statement read.

NCC Chairman Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe noted that about 35 Emergency Communications Centres had already been established across the country, but urged greater support from governors, the police, ambulance services, and NEMA to keep them operational.

He stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on collective commitment:“Everyone is expected to buy into this initiative. It is a patriotic duty to ensure that anyone in distress can get help swiftly.”

The adoption of 112 is expected to streamline emergency response, reduce delays, and provide Nigerians with a single, reliable number for police, fire, medical, and disaster-related emergencies.

Political Analyst Urges Nigerians to Treat Political Commentators With Greater Skepticism (Must Read)

Published

on

A public affairs commentator, Hon. Nkemakonam “Olman” Nwonwu, has called on Nigerians to stop reacting with surprise or anger to the changing political positions of some prominent commentators, arguing that many have developed a pattern of aligning with interests that benefit them.

In a statement shared under the Olnationz platform, Nwonwu cited figures such as Kenneth Okonkwo, Daniel Bwala, and Reno Omokri as examples of individuals whose public positions, according to him, often change depending on prevailing political interests.

He argued that rather than allowing such statements to shape public opinion or provoke emotional reactions, Nigerians should approach political commentary with caution and evaluate every claim based on facts and evidence.

According to Nwonwu, the country’s future should be guided by integrity, accountability, and credible leadership rather than by “loud voices” whose positions appear to shift for convenience.

He further warned that giving excessive attention to what he described as political opportunists only increases their influence, urging citizens to focus instead on substantive national issues and credible public discourse.

The remarks add to the ongoing debate over the role of political commentators and influencers in shaping public opinion in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
