Enugu APC Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah addressing newsmen after the inspection

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu has lashed out at Governor Peter Mbah over ongoing demolition of property for bus terminal projects.

The party which conducted a tour of site of demolitions in the state capital, described the exercise as ill conceived, and an “economic terrorism on the people of Enugu State”.

Addressing newsmen during the tours of the demolition sites on Tuesday, the State chairman of the party, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, called on the House of Representatives to invoke its powers to set up an administrative panel of inquiry to stop “this land grabbing scheme and make sure commensurate compensation was paid to not only land owners of destroyed properties but also those whose businesses were destroyed”.

Agballah, explained that it was important that a national public inquiry be set by the House of reps to stop the impunity going on in Enugu and make sure that the governor was held responsible for desecrating the constitutional rights of the citizens to own property and carry on their lawful businesses.

“We also call on those whose businesses were destroyed to seek redress and make sure they get commensurate compensation for their destroyed businesses and we pledge to fully support them. Enugu citizens should not tolerate this show of unbridled dictatorship, impunity and wickedness.

“The demolition of Holy Ghost/Railway/Okpara avenue axis, Gariki Market, Abakpa Market and Ogige Market in Nsukka had led to untold financial and psychological hardship on affected families, economic decline due to loss of revenue and jobs, deteriorating living conditions characterised by increased poverty, social unrest, increased crime and loss of goods and services.”

The party urged Gov. Mbah to stop further demolition on other areas, parks and market that had been marked, advising that Government must carry out cost benefit analysis before embarking on a destructive project, “if indeed, it’s for the people”.

The chairman explained that the party was forced to break silence because of the “wanton, unbridled, callous and terrorist gestapo style destruction of private homes, private motor loading bays, over a hundred warehouses, a burgeoning industrial cluster of over 200 palm kernel processing plants, which is the biggest supplier of PKO in the entire Eastern Nigeria,10 chemical producing warehouses that were built in the fifties and sixties by the U.T.C, S.C.O.A, Chris Chemist, Maduka and Sons Ltd, Mgbemena Family and Farm Associates, Hogis Engineering Company, Dizzy Oil Co Ltd, FCMB bank, Ecobank, Onitsha south, Eastern Mass transit Co, Chisco Mass Transit, Romchi Mass Transit, Oha Community Microfinance Bank and over three hundred shops.

“Completely destroying buildings and educational materials of OSISATECH Polytechnic, the biggest and foremost Polytechnic in Enugu State despite the fact that the owner Rev Fr. Emmanuel Edeh got a court order stopping the demolition. The governor ignored the order as the bulldozers went ahead to level the school. The Red Cross building which houses almost a hundred motherless babies was pulled down while the babies were in the building with no alternative made for them.

“This sudden destruction led to the death of one baby who couldn’t survive the shock. It is only a heartless government that will pull down a building where the motherless babies were sleeping without providing an alternative habitation for them. It is alleged that not less than ten persons died during the destruction of peoples properties. Some weeks ago a decomposing body was exhumed from the debris.

“Only a vicious and soul-less government will destroy the training school of the civil engineering department of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, alongside ten three –bedroom flats that railway workers and some retirees were living that was built as far as 1940s.

“The workers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) demonstrated and issued a seven day ultimatum to the state government to negotiate on how to replace its offices, workshops and quarters demolished or face legal action. They stated that over 21 billion Naira in property and equipment was lost by the railway alone in the demolition. It is good news to hear that the House of Representatives has ordered its Committee on Land Transport to commence investigation into the destruction and forceful takeover of properties belonging to the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

“We would want Nigerians to note that what is going on is another land grab scheme characteristic of the ruling PDP Ebeano hegemony. This was the same tactics that was deployed by his predecessors in land grabbing the zoological parks and gardens which was destroyed in same manner and later parcellated to high ranking members of the Government, same tactics was used to take over the biggest golf course which land was grabbed and percellated to members of the government, same for Ikenga hotels, W.T.C Enugu, IMT Rectors Village, the land zoned for the building of Rangers stadium and even land meant for the conference centre which was initiated in the eighties by the Sampson Emeka Omeruah administration, this was the same tactics used to take over all ventilation and amusement parks and open spaces in Enugu city.

‘These are heritage sites inherited from the Eastern regional government and belongs to all Igbos as Enugu wouldn’t have had all those iconic heritage sites if it was not a regional capital. This is the problem we have with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu state right from time. The same PDP destroyed government reserved area. Enugu state governors past and present are the only governors that when in office they will forcefully take peoples land. It doesn’t happen in any other state in whole of South East.

“No investor will invest in a state where this kind of demolition takes place every so often. We still remember how ENTRACO was used in enriching government officials. All transport companies set up by the Federal, States and LGAs have all failed woefully. In Enugu we know how the resources of coal city shuttle, ENTRACO, Coal city taxi, were all failed government initiatives in transport that ended up enriching the government officials.”

The statement in full below:

MBAH’S ILL CONCIEVED DEMOLITION SPREE IS ECONOMIC TERORISM ON THE PEOPLE OF ENUGU STATE: A STATEMENT BY THE ALL PROGRESSIVES CONGRESS (APC) ENUGU STATE.

Good afternoon gentlemen and ladies of the press. As you are aware for one year we did not comment on the worrisome activities of the Peter Mbah’s government because as citizens of the state and major stakeholders in the Enugu project we want every government to succeed, as the success of every government irrespective of the party that brought it into office will be enjoyed by us all and generations unborn.

Another reason why we have not commented on the activities of the Peter Mbah led government is because we know the government is battling with a widely perceived sense of illegitimacy, because he is widely believed not to have won the legitimate votes cast even though he was declared by INEC and confirmed by the judicial authorities. So we did not want to heat up the system knowing that he may find it difficult to rule this state if we unleash the weapon of opposition against his obviously debilitated government.

The third reason was that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revenue allocation to all States and local government areas have increased exponentially to the extent that Enugu State’s monthly allocation have tripled making this present Mbah government the highest recipient of federal allocation since the creation of Enugu State. It is an empirical fact that from May 29th 2023 to May 29th 2024, Peter Mbah’s government has received not less than N 475,963,652,019 Billion Naira only.

The breakdown is as follows; Federal allocation to the State is 147,778,456,610.09, Local Government Allocation: 64,185,195,409.01,Infrastructure allocation: 34,000,000,000,State IGR not less than: 60,000,000,000,Loans: 170,000,000,000. Making it a total of Four hundred and seventy five billion, Nine hundred and sixty three million, six hundred and fifty two thousand, and nineteen kobo.

We felt that we should not heat up the system because with the humongous allocation which is almost three times what the previous governments received we felt that any serious government with such a bumper revenue will surely succeed. With this revenue we expected that Gov. Peter Mbah should have built at least 2,500 kilometres of roads having covenanted in his manifesto that he will construct 10,000 kilometres of road in Enugu State within four years. 2,500 kilometres is 25% of the total road network he covenanted to build and one year is a quarter of his tenure of four years.

With this mind blowing funds we believed that Gov. Peter Mbah ought to have completed provision of water in Enugu city which he boasted he would complete in 180 days. With this unprecedented revenue we hoped that Peter Mbah would have at least built within this year his ill-conceived smart schools in 80 wards out of the 260 wards he covenanted to deliver in his manifesto within four years. It is also pertinent to note that the ill-conceived smart school projects is another avenue where the government of Peter Mbah is wasting billions of money to build one school per ward, whereas thousands of public schools are lying in ruins. Mbah is yet to construct any single public building in the state, yet he is busy destroying existing building and businesses constructed by individuals before he was born.

With this once in a lifetime revenue we felt Gov. Peter Mbah would have equipped our health institutions, built rural roads, and equipped the security agencies with the needed logistical support to secure Enugu State. There is no landmark project one can point at despite borrowing N 170 billion and increased federal allocation and IGR of N 305 billion, all totalling N 475 billion. We should also remember that when Mbah wrote his manifesto he didn’t know that revenue would triple due to fuel subsidy removal so he has no reason not to meet up with his much touted developmental plans as other states like Imo, Ebonyi and Abia states are currently doing.

We have always suspected that Peter Mbahs government was an unmitigated disaster but with recent developments it is now obvious to all the citizens of Enugu State.

However, we decided to make a press statement after one year to inform the general public that Peter Mbah’s government has failed woefully and should account to the state for the over 470 billion naira that he has collected in a year. Where is this money, where are the projects this money was used for? The state owe it as a duty to know what has happened to this humongous revenue and what it has been used for within one year of Gov. Peter Mbah’s bull in the chinaware government  where his achievements is engaging in sophistry, casuistry and paralogism with intent to bamboozle the ignorant folks of Enugu State.

What is called “Tax” in Enugu state has become extortion of sorts under the present administration: ranging from land rent, property tax, cost of lifting a plot of land, sales tax, income tax, rates and levies. And the way government goes about collecting these taxes is brutal, including shutting down businesses that employ thousands of people.

However, a state of emergency that has made us to break our silence is the wanton, unbridled, callous and terrorist gestapo style destruction of private homes, private motor loading bays, over a hundred warehouses, a burgeoning industrial cluster of over 200 palm kernel processing plants, which is the biggest supplier of PKO in the entire Eastern Nigeria,10 chemical producing warehouses that were built in the fifties and sixties by the U.T.C, S.C.O.A, Chris Chemist, Maduka and Sons Ltd, Mgbemena Family and Farm Associates, Hogis Engineering Company, Dizzy Oil Co Ltd, FCMB bank, Ecobank, Onitsha south, Eastern Mass transit Co, Chisco Mass Transit, Romchi Mass Transit, Oha Community Microfinance Bank, over three hundred shops, completely destroying buildings and educational materials of Osisatech Polytechnic, the biggest and foremost Polytechnic in Enugu State despite the fact that the owner Rev Fr. This is pure economic and ill-conceived hare brained project which is a product of a government with shallow intellect masquerading in yahoo sophistry which cannot stand intellectual inquisition, whose purpose simply is to control the resources that will accrue from the state controlled transportation system. The destroyed area was the recycling hub in Enugu. This place also houses private transport companies, Petrol stations, Shopping centres etc. if it is not terrorism, who destroys the oldest and biggest motherless baby’s home and orphanage in the entire South East, South-South Nigeria which is run by the Red Cross. The building is as old as Enugu town. If this is not a land grab scheme, tell me why the hub must be in the city centre, a place already congested. If this is not economic terrorism, tell me why the government will demolish the biggest private owned polytechnic in Enugu State, why the government destroyed over a hundred warehouses where almost 90% of goods valued at over one hundred billion that are sold in Ogbete are warehoused.

It is important to inform you that part of modern urban renewal fundamental principles is that whenever human, economic and living development catches up with a major market or transport hub, such markets and hubs are relocated to the outskirts of the city.  It may be necessary to inform us all here that the present Main market was sited here by colonial authorities in 1929 because here was the outskirts of Enugu in those days. Even the New market was sited in 1975 to its present site which again was deliberately positioned at the entrance of the city, so it is obvious the current government is not genuine in its schemes and project. When the then government in 1975 wanted to pull down and rebuild the Main market they moved the traders to a relief market which is the present day New market. Enugu is already bursting with population explosion, and traffic congestion and urgently needs decongestion, which means that new projects should move to new areas or satellite towns. Like experts counselled, Enugu state government should have known that the focus of modern theory and practice of development is on the development of new satellite towns as a means of much needed urban decongestion, optimization of public utilities and ecological maximization. It is inconceivable for anybody to leverage on an over one hundred year old colonial city Enugu to implement a prototype of Dubai transportation blueprint. Enugu had the best master plan in Nigeria, but successive PDP governors have not re-evaluated the master plan but have continuously and consistently bastardized the master plan.

I have been an advocate of thoroughbreds with strong intellectual and moral standing elected into the office of the Governor of Enugu State. The people should not be elected on the basis of wealth acquisition especially when such acquisitions are questionable. Nowhere in the world do you carry out such projects without implementing the principles of (T.O.D) otherwise called Transit oriented development which is aimed at bringing all commercial activities, buildings, public space together and connecting them to a near excellent transit service to every part of the city. If the principles of T.O.D had been implemented the government would not even think of building the biggest transportation hub opposite the biggest market in the city. This will lead to congestion and a calamitous traffic bottleneck. The intellectual emptiness of the Peter Mbah led government is reflected in this ill-conceived project that seek to apishly imitate other landmark projects by other government and in this instant, the Lagos state government. The Lagos state government transport hubs are well thought out projects that conform to all the principles of Transit Oriented Development (T.O.D). How can you destroy entire markets at Ogige in Nsukka, Gariki and Abakpa markets without first providing relief markets? It is akin to sentencing the citizens to sudden death. How can siting a motor park and destruction of livelihood of the tens of thousands of your citizens be for the greater good? When has the business of parks become the business of government, in this modern time governments are running away from running transport companies, this government is planning to set up a transportation hub, is it his business? Transport hubs have been organized by private people since the end of civil war and they have been doing better than the ones government set up. The people of Enugu state must condemn these nefarious act and use constituted means to stop the perennial grabbing of peoples land by the present government.

We call on the House of Reps to invoke its powers to set up an administrative panel of inquiry to stop this land grabbing scheme and make sure commiserate compensation is paid to not only land owners of destroyed properties but also those whose businesses were destroyed. It is important that a national public inquiry be set by the House of reps to stop the impunity going on in Enugu and make sure that the governor is held responsible for desecrating the constitutional rights of the citizens to own property and carry on their lawful businesses. We also call on those whose businesses were destroyed to seek redress and make sure they get commensurate compensation for their destroyed businesses and we pledge to fully support them. Enugu citizens should not tolerate this show of unbridled dictatorship, impunity and wickedness.

The demolition of Holy Ghost/Railway/Okpara avenue axis, Gariki Market, Abakpa Market and Ogige Market in Nsukka had led to untold financial and psychological hardship on affected families, economic decline due to loss of revenue and jobs, deteriorating living conditions characterised by increased poverty, social unrest, increased crime and loss of goods and services.

Gov. Mbah must not demolish other planned areas, parks and market marked for demolition. Government must carry out cost benefit analysis before embarking on a destructive project, if indeed, it’s for the people.

We know that the state government will unleash its (social) media Rottweilers after every critical voice in the state but that will not deter us from speaking from time to time. Enugu state is bigger than any one individual.

Tinubu, Obi, Sowore Sign 2027 Peace Accord

Published

Presidential candidates and national chairmen of major political parties on Tuesday signed the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections in Abuja.

The accord was signed on behalf of President Bola Tinubu by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, alongside the All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, and Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress signed the accord in person.

Other parties that participated in the signing ceremony, organised by the National Peace Committee, included the Labour Party, Democratic Leadership Alliance, National Democratic Party, National Rescue Movement, Social Democratic Party, Youth Party, Young Progressives Party and Zenith Labour Party, among others.

The ceremony was held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Video footage of the event aired on Channels TV shows party leaders and presidential candidates approaching the table one after another to sign the accord.

An MC at the event described the moment as one in which parties and candidates affirm that, despite disagreements on how Nigeria should be governed, “this great nation must move forward in peace and harmony.”

He stressed that the signing is “not a mere ceremony” or simply “putting ink on paper,” but a substantive commitment.

The National Peace Committee, chaired by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has facilitated similar accords in previous election cycles to promote democratic stability and reduce political tensions.

However, speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, Sowore dismissed the accord as a “ritual”, citing deaths recorded during the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

“I don’t have faith in it. I’m bringing faith to the system. Those are two different things,” Sowore said.

He alleged that people who signed previous peace accords in Osun State later engaged in violence.

“The people who signed the peace accord in Osun State killed 50 people after they signed the peace accord.

“So if you meant anything at all, why would you sign the peace accord and then go and carry a gun after that and kill 50 people? What will you be expecting after signing today’s peace accord? We conclude the ritual and move on to campaigning.”

Sowore called for a “Justice Accord” that would provide sanctions for candidates or parties that violate the commitments contained in the peace agreement.

Similarly, Obi called for peaceful and issue-based campaigns, saying politicians seeking public office must conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the positions they aspire to occupy.

“We have a peaceful, issue-based campaign. We must, for the sake of this country, ensure that our conduct reflects the office we’re seeking, our behaviour. We must do the right thing and campaign on issues that Nigerians are going through today,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also called for the remembrance of those who lost their lives during the recent Osun governorship election.

“Let us not forget those who died in ensuring that the election in Osun was achieved, the way it went. We should visit them, console their families, remain prayerful and conduct ourselves in a way that in our democracy, nobody needs to die for an election. It is painful, and I wish it never happens again,” he added.

One-Chance Robbers Caught: See What Police Found In Their Car

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested two suspected members of a “one-chance” robbery syndicate operating in the Abeokuta metropolis.

The suspects, identified as Bidemi Tijani, 29, and Olajide Rasaq, 42, were arrested on August 15 following an intelligence-led operation by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit.

The command said in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, that the suspects were arrested after operatives received intelligence that members of the syndicate, who disguised as commercial taxi operators, were sighted in a taxi heading towards Ita-Oshin, Abeokuta.

“Acting promptly on the tip-off, tactical operatives of the VCRU gave the fleeing robbers a hot chase towards Ita-Oshin, successfully intercepting the vehicle and apprehending the two suspects.

“Upon interrogation and putting down their statements under caution, both suspects confessed to being active members of the ‘One Chance’ robbery syndicate terrorizing commuters within the Abeokuta metropolis.

“Efforts are currently being intensified by operatives to track down and apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate, establish the full extent of their activities, and recover necessary exhibits,” the statement read.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the VCRU operatives for their swift response, operational vigilance and tactical professionalism.

Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to combating criminal activities in the state, warning that perpetrators of crime would find no safe haven in Ogun State.

He urged residents and commuters to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or criminal activities to the police without delay through Gateway Shield, 0800 000 9111, or the emergency lines 09164859299 and 09154293464.

Anglican Bishop Sends Strong Warning To Lay Readers

Published

on

The Anglican Bishop of the Missionary Diocese of Oyo South, Rt. Rev’d Olufemi Familoni, has urged church workers to remain committed to service in God’s vineyard.

He gave the charge at the licensing and commissioning of 10 pioneer lay readers for the diocese at the Cathedral Church of St. John, Akinmoorin, Oyo State, on Sunday.

Familoni said at the event that working in God’s vineyard requires faithfulness and deep commitment.

”It is better not to offer yourself for God’s service than to offer yourself and not be faithful. God requires faithfulness. It is not the volume of work you do for God that matters; it is being faithful in what He has asked you to do,” he said.

According to him, God does not reward sacrifice that is devoid of obedience.

“You remember Saul. He was asked to destroy the Amalekites, but he spared the king and some of the spoil under the claim that he wanted to sacrifice them to God.

”Samuel, a prophet of God, told him obedience is better than sacrifice. You cannot earn God’s favour by doing things He has not commanded. I am urging you, as you begin this journey as lay readers in this diocese, to let commitment and faithfulness be your watchwords,” he added.

While noting that the lay readers are pioneers in that arm of the diocese, he said, “It is the example you set today that people coming behind you will build on.

“I want to encourage you to brace yourselves for hard work and be dedicated to the cause of Christ. God, who sees your labour of love, will reward you in His own time.”

Serving as a lay reader, according to the Anglican tradition, is a noble calling.

“Not everybody has the capacity and calling to do what you are doing or what you have signed up to do. I want you to see it as a privilege to serve the Lord in this capacity. I want you to be faithful,” he said.

The licensing and commissioning ceremony was a remarkable event in the young diocese’s history.

Familoni prayed that the pioneer lay readers would faithfully proclaim God’s word, serve God’s people with humility, and become effective instruments in advancing Christ’s Kingdom.

Inside Story: Why Agbebaku Had To Resign As Edo Speaker

Published

on

The immediate past Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has said he resigned from the position for personal reasons and in the interest of peace, Edo State and his constituency.

Agbebaku disclosed this in a statement shared by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, on Facebook on Monday.

His resignation came amid moves by some lawmakers to remove him from office.

Agbebaku, however, said his decision was not as a result of any breakdown in his relationship with members of the House, saying he maintained a cordial relationship with the other 23 lawmakers throughout his tenure.

“Differences will naturally arise because we all have our individual identities and beliefs. However, that did not stop us from passing people-oriented Bills and Resolutions in the last three years of my leadership,” he stated.

He said his decision to resign was taken after considering the broader interests of the state and his constituents.

“My decision to resign was taken in the interest of peace, the state, and my immediate constituency, Owan West,” Agbebaku said.

The former Speaker expressed appreciation to Governor Monday Okpebholo for the support and cooperation he received during his tenure.

“I appreciate the Governor, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his support and cooperation during my tenure,” he said.

Agbebaku also reaffirmed his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress and Edo State.

“I reaffirm my loyalty to the party and to the state,” he stated.

He appealed to his supporters to remain calm following his resignation and the subsequent change in leadership of the Assembly.

“I urge all my supporters to remain calm and to continue to believe in the greater good and the development of democracy in the state,” he said.

Agbebaku also congratulated his successor, Yekini Idaiye, and the other principal officers of the Assembly.

“I congratulate the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Yekini Idaiye, and other principal officers of the House,” he said.

He urged the lawmakers to work together and maintain peace within the Assembly.

“I call for peaceful coexistence among all lawmakers,” Agbebaku added.

Meanwhile, Idaiye, who represents Akoko-Edo Constituency I, emerged as the new Speaker following Agbebaku’s resignation.

The third-term lawmaker later accused Agbebaku of corruption and poor leadership, alleging that the Assembly had suffered prolonged adjournments and other challenges under his leadership.

Yekini said, “The House was inaugurated on the 16th of June, 2023 under the leadership of Agbebaku, and since then we have been passing through a lot of challenges, corruption here and there, adjournment here and there, sometimes for 30 days without a cause.”

“We are not happy with his leadership style. His leadership is poor and it has been drawing the work of the government backwards,” he added.

The Olu Of Warri Just Did This And It’s Uniting The Entire City

Published

on

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has inaugurated the maiden edition of the Warri Unity Games, declaring that the annual event would be held on the first Saturday of the coronation anniversary celebration week to promote unity among the various ethnic groups in Warri.

The monarch made this known in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Monday, where he addressed guests, students and stakeholders at the Federal Government College, Warri.

“Our beloved people, our honoured neighbours, our distinguished guests — we welcome you, with joy in our heart, to this first edition of the Warri Unity Games,” the monarch said.

He said the games were designed to reveal that the initiative would help the community rise above what he described as past hurts and suspicions.

“It is our hope, and indeed our firm conviction, that these Games will reveal a simple truth: that far more unites us than divides us. And beyond that, they will show us something greater still — that when we rise above our past hurts, rise above our traumas, rise above our suspicions, and rise above our differences, we become capable of attaining a powerful, collective destiny.”

Recalling his coronation in August 2021, the Olu said he had declared then that he had no intention to prosper in isolation, stressing that the Unity Games now gave that pledge, in his words, a home on the calendar.

The traditional ruler reflected on a painful chapter in the ancient kingdom’s history, recalling that a proposed land carnival marking the coronation anniversary of his father, the late Ogiame Atuwatse II, degenerated into violence in the early 1990s.

“It led to violence and devastation from which, three decades later, Warri has yet to fully recover,” he said, attributing the crisis to pride and what he called “negative and destructive energies.”

He noted that Warri had, at the time, been staging a carnival that captured the attention of all of Nigeria, well before the emergence of Cross River State’s Calabar Carnival under former Governor Donald Duke, lamenting that the city lost its pioneering place as a result of the crisis.

The Olu, however, expressed confidence that Warri would rise again, declaring, “This time, however, we will not sit and wait for an unfortunate reaction to a beautiful and inspirational innovation. We are taking the bull by the horns.”

He added that his reign’s coronation anniversary would, from that point on, be devoted to unity, peace, progress and prosperity, for as long as his reign lasted.

The Warri Unity Games, according to the palace, is expected to become an annual fixture on the kingdom’s calendar, bringing residents across communal lines together in the spirit of the monarch’s unity agenda.

Nigeria Gets Its Own Meta AI Academy. Here’s What It Means For You

Published

on

The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has partnered with Meta, the 3 Million Technical Talent programme and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria to launch an artificial intelligence academy aimed at expanding Nigeria’s pool of AI talent and strengthening its technology ecosystem.

The academy will focus on moving participants from basic AI awareness to practical applications, offering training, technical support and opportunities to develop and commercialise AI-powered solutions, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, said in a statement on Monday.

The programme will comprise three components: AI skills development, a startup pitchathon and a six-week developer bootcamp.

“Through this partnership, we are equipping developers, entrepreneurs, and young professionals with practical AI skills while creating pathways for innovation and globally competitive startups,” Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, noted.

The minister said the initiative reflected the government’s commitment to building Nigeria’s AI ecosystem through public-private partnerships and strengthening the country’s position in Africa’s digital economy.

The skills programme will be open to the wider 3MTT community and will offer courses covering generative AI, prompt engineering, multimodal AI, data analytics and the development of applications using Meta’s Llama models.

Courses will be delivered through platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp at no cost to participants. The top 100 performers will be eligible for scholarships towards Meta Blueprint certifications and up to $5,000 in advertising credits.

The programme will also target Nigeria’s emerging startup ecosystem through an AI Startup Pitchathon. Applications close on August 21, with 10 startups to be selected to pitch at GITEX Nigeria on September 3.

Two winning startups will each receive $5,000 in cash funding and $2,000 in Meta advertising credits. They will also receive an all-expenses-paid opportunity to represent Nigeria at Meta’s AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, in November.

“Nigeria is home to some of Africa’s most dynamic AI talent. What many founders and developers need is greater access to practical training, funding and platforms to build impactful solutions,” Head of Public Policy, Anglophone West Africa at Meta, Sade Dada, stated.

The six-week Developer Bootcamp, to be delivered by RAIN, will provide selected developers and startups with intensive hands-on training to build functional AI products and market-ready solutions, supported by technical guidance and access to Meta’s AI experts.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of RAIN, Dr Olushola Ayoola, said the partnership demonstrated the importance of coordinated efforts in developing Nigeria’s AI capabilities.

“Building Nigeria’s AI capacity requires the kind of coordinated effort we are seeing here,” Ayoola remarked.

The partnership builds on the Federal Government’s 3MTT programme, which is aimed at developing a pipeline of technically skilled Nigerians for the country’s digital economy.

The push comes as artificial intelligence increasingly becomes a factor in technology development, business productivity and the creation of new digital products. Building a larger pool of developers capable of deploying AI could help local companies reduce reliance on imported technical expertise while giving startups access to skills needed to compete in regional and global markets.

The government has increasingly positioned AI and other emerging technologies as part of its strategy for developing Nigeria’s digital economy, while technology companies are looking to expand the pool of developers capable of building applications on their platforms.

17-Year-Old Used ChatGPT Before Tragedy: What Police Found

Published

on

A 17-year-old Massachusetts boy has been accused of killing his mother and younger brother after prosecutors said he used ChatGPT to explore “theoretical ideas or fantasies” about killing his family.

Arjun Aravind, from Acton, was arraigned on Thursday in Concord District Court on two counts of murder, alongside charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery.

He was charged as an adult under Massachusetts law and pleaded not guilty. The court ordered him held without bail.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said investigators uncovered what she described as “concerning behavior” before the killings, including Aravind’s internet activity and his use of ChatGPT.

Ryan said the teenager allegedly used the artificial intelligence chatbot to “make searches including for theoretical ideas or fantasies regarding killing his family.”

Aravind is accused of killing his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at the family’s home on Martha Lane in Acton.

Police were called to the residence shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday after Aravind’s father requested a welfare check.

According to authorities, the father had been at work and became concerned after a tutor who arrived at the house was unable to get inside. Repeated attempts to contact the family also went unanswered.

Officers who entered the house found Siddharth dead on the first floor. Venkatesan was later found dead in the finished basement.

Prosecutors said investigators found evidence of a violent physical struggle inside the home, with preliminary evidence indicating that both victims suffered blunt-force trauma. Their official causes of death are yet to be determined by the medical examiner.

Investigators also discovered that Venkatesan’s green Honda Accord was missing from the residence.

Aravind was found at about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday inside the vehicle in a parking lot in nearby Wayland, Massachusetts. He was arrested without incident.

Prosecutors said investigators recovered several items from the car that they believe corresponded with evidence from the crime scene, although authorities have not publicly identified those items.

Court documents reportedly indicate that Aravind’s father had become concerned about his son’s recent behaviour and internet use and had begun hiding knives inside the home.

Aravind’s lawyer, Debra DeWitt, requested a mental health evaluation for the teenager.

When the judge asked whether the request was related to Aravind’s competency to stand trial or his potential criminal responsibility, DeWitt said that had not yet been determined.

Aravind had also received treatment for an injury to his hand before Thursday’s court appearance and was medically cleared to attend the hearing.

The family had recently moved to Acton, an affluent community about 30 miles northwest of Boston, partly because of its schools and support system for their children, according to Aravind’s lawyer.

Aravind is expected to return to court on September 11 for a probable cause hearing.

The allegations against him have not been proven in court.

Official vs Black Market: Dollar To Naira Rate Today Will Surprise You

Published

on

The Nigerian naira opened the week relatively strong against the United States dollar, with the local currency trading around N1,357.61 per dollar at the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) window and about N1,420 per dollar at the parallel market.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the NFEM rate stood at N1,357.61 per US dollar as of the latest available official market data. The rate is based on the volume-weighted average of transactions in the official foreign exchange market.

The parallel market, meanwhile, continued to quote the dollar at around N1,420, leaving a gap of approximately N62.39 between the two markets. Proshare reported that the naira had appreciated by 59 basis points at the official market to N1,357.61/$, while the parallel-market rate remained at N1,420/$.

The latest official rate represents an improvement for the naira compared with the previous week’s N1,365.69 per dollar. The appreciation has been linked to improved foreign exchange liquidity and supply conditions in the official market.

More recent market indicators also point to continued stability in the naira-dollar exchange rate. A live USD/NGN rate source put the dollar at about N1,358.30 as of the early hours of August 17, while other market data placed the currency around the N1,358 level.

The naira’s performance comes amid stronger external reserves and recent changes by the CBN aimed at improving liquidity and efficiency in Nigeria’s financial markets. Nigeria’s external reserves rose to $52.19 billion as of August 12, 2026, their highest level in 17 years, according to recent reports.

For Nigerians buying or selling dollars outside the official market, the parallel-market rate remains higher than the NFEM rate. The difference reflects continued segmentation between the two foreign exchange channels, although the spread remains relatively contained compared with periods of severe market volatility.

As trading progresses on Monday, August 17, the official NFEM rate and parallel-market quotations could change depending on dollar supply, demand from importers and other FX users, CBN interventions and broader global currency movements.
