To Uche Anichukwu: You’re An Excellent Gift To Humanity

Published

on

Uche Anichukw

I’ve momentorily lacked the exact expression to qualify the character and nature of my brother, ezigbo nwannem na Nomeh, Hon. Uche Anichukwu, since the news of his birthday broke out.

Uche Anichukwu, Onyeishi Okanga, as he is fondly called by his friends, and “Otiagbala” by his inner caucus, (laughs, winks, smiles), if I should be allowed to use those local but metaphysical adjectives to qualify him, has proved his mettle of friendship, dynamism, loyalty, dedication, resilience, and discipline.

It doesn’t matter where the sojourn has taken him to. It doesn’t matter the direction. It doesn’t matter the path taken. Anichukwu remains a man that can be predicted on his stand and standard. He is such a refined personality that could be reassuring as a pillar of support and trust. I share his experience. He is a good man.

My meeting with Anichukwu, before providence would finally bring us into the same fold, had always been a mile apart. I read him. Outstanding. Brilliant. Superb. But I avoided him for the simple reason of an elder brother operating from Olympian height. But that wasn’t the reality. It was a mere perception.

In those days, Anichukwu’s name was a household name in the media. The former Deputy President of the Senate, His Excellency, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, would not attend any function without Anichukwu staying around. He transmuted from an aide to a family member of the Distinguished Senator. That’s what loyalty, hardwork and trust could earn.

Anichukwu, lettered, or call him a media veteran, had worked as an aide to the then President of the Nigerian Senate, His Excellency, Senator Ken Nnamani.

He did prove his uncommon intellectual sagacity in the media space, even to the point of becoming critical of instruments, including budgets, presented for consideration by the presidency or the federal government. A lot were uncovered.

The nation was saved on occasions from the now known infamous padding. He served the National Assembly with expertise, and on the wall of the senate, written with his ink, a defining moment of true service to humanity.

With Anichukwu joining Senator Ekweremadu, he continued on the voyage of emancipation of the country through critical assessments of projects and scorecards of the executive of their performances vis-a-vis their approved budgetary allocations.

On the global plane, the good colours of Nigeria were flown despite the negative impression about the country. With his pen, he joined in the journey of redeeming the image of our dear country. I salute his the audacious belief that Nigeria could always be great with all hands on deck.

Over the past one year, I met Anichukwu where we worked together to recreate Enugu State of our dreams through a common project, the cause which we were convinced, not on the altar of clannishness or selfish drive, but on the general assessment that such project would mean a new dawn for the people of Enugu State.

A project, which if missed, could take the state over a century to get it right. We saw it coming. It was like the journey of the Magi where T.S Elliot wrote about the coming of the Messiah.

We set out, galloped through the rough terrains, where hostile Herod and his men laid landmines, ambushes and launched missiles from all cylinders to extinguish the mission. However, the prophecy foretold would come to fruition. With Dan Nwomeh, Uche Anichukwu and myself, journeyed through the harmattan season, our hope was clad in a new season of a redeemed Enugu State. Then also came Reuben Onyishi. Far from the end of the tunnel, together, we had already seen the light, permeating. Beyond the Magi’s experience, we got a generation of electorate yearning to join the search, and with Governor Peter Mbah in the picture, the electorate exclaimed, “We have found him.”

Anichukwu would be categorised as a “big guy” in terms of the wherewithal as a foremost consultant for reputable bigwigs and international organisations. But humility would not allow him to display even a modicum of his “big boyness”. That’s a lesson to us that it pays to be humble regardless of economic and social status. I’ve learnt that from him.

I’ve also learnt and added to my stock, how to be proactive and disciplined to achieve my goals. Anichukwu embodies that zeal to work and deliver within time. It’s an indelible experience working with Anichukwu as a Senior Special Assistant to the Executive Governor of Enugu State on External Relations. He does his work with respect and equanimity. All thanks for your understanding.

As you add another year to your age, Onyeishi Okanga, may the Almighty God continue to strengthen and bless you exponentially.

Happy Birthday, my brother, and as that civil defence officer would add, “my oga at the top”. Many more years of God’s goodness and mercy. Congratulations.

After Oko Hostel Tragedy, Sen. Uche Ekwunife Calls for Tougher Building Safety Enforcement (See details)

Published

on

The Most Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic collapse of a student hostel in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, which claimed lives and left several others injured.

In a statement issued following the incident, Senator Ekwunife extended her heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, describing the loss of lives as a painful tragedy for the bereaved families, the Oko community, and Anambra State as a whole.

She also expressed concern for those who survived the collapse and are currently receiving medical treatment, praying for their quick and complete recovery.

While commending the efforts of rescue workers, security personnel, healthcare providers, volunteers, and community members involved in the emergency response, the former senator urged them to sustain the search-and-rescue operation until every missing person is accounted for.

Senator Ekwunife further called on the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the cause of the building collapse. She stressed that establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident is crucial not only for ensuring accountability but also for preventing similar tragedies in the future.

She also advocated stricter monitoring and enforcement of building regulations across Anambra State, emphasizing that adherence to approved construction standards and professional guidelines must be treated as a critical public safety responsibility rather than a mere administrative requirement.

According to her, stronger enforcement by relevant regulatory agencies would significantly reduce the risk of building failures and help safeguard lives and property.

Senator Ekwunife concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, divine comfort for their grieving families, and speedy healing for those injured in the unfortunate incident.

Shock Proposal? Senator Pushes Bill to Recognize Native Doctors’ Role in Connecting With Ancestors

Published

on

Garba Maidoki, senator representing Kebbi south, has called for the inclusion of traditional medicine in a bill seeking to overhaul
Nigeria’s food and drug regulatory framework.

He argues that indigenous healing practices remain relevant, particularly in rural communities.

The senator spoke on Tuesday during debate on a bill seeking to repeal the Food, Drug and Related Products (Registration, Etc.) Act and the
Food and Drug Act, and replace them with a single legal framework for regulating food, medicines and other products that affect public health.

‘MOST RURAL DWELLERS RELY ON TRADITIONAL MEDICINE’

Speaking in support of the bill sponsored by Sadiq Umar, senator representing Kwara north, Maidoki said the legislation should also
recognise traditional medicine.

“I rise to also support this motion ably sponsored by Senator Suleiman Sadiq. This motion, as my colleague said, is apt, is timely,
and is in good faith to modernise the practice of food and drug registration in Nigeria,” he said.

“But Mr. President, I want to bring to your attention that even though this is modernised, we have not seen anything on this bill
concerning traditional medicine.

“Concerning traditional medicine, sir, most of our rural dwellers, most of them rely mostly on this traditional medicine.

“And I think it is high time that we have a law that also allows traditional medicine to be implemented.

“Holistically, if this is done, we will also reduce the cost of importation of drugs from foreign nations, and we will rely mostly on our
own indigenous herbs and medication by our own native doctors.”

Maidoki said incorporating traditional medicine into the legal framework would reduce dependence on imported medicines.

He added that the bill’s sponsor, a pharmacist, should work towards integrating traditional practitioners into the country’s healthcare
system.

“I think if this is done, the pharmacist Senator Suleiman will be able to incorporate these people and make this holistic,” he said.

The lawmaker said some ailments are better treated with herbal remedies than orthodox medicine.

“Even some of us that are senators, sometimes we rely, we go to herbal medicine to help us with one ailment or the other, which sometimes
the modern medicine has no answer. Like if your ancestors decide to talk to you, you need a native doctor to intercede on your behalf,” he added.

Maidoki’s remarks elicited laughter in the senate chamber.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio responded in a light-hearted manner.

“Thank you, Distinguished Senator Garba. The native doctor will intercede between you and the ancestor,” he said.

“It’s actually baffling that this was part of the African religion, but when the white people came, they now told us that we don’t need
our ancestors, but I think from what you are saying, you are still using your ancestors.”

The bill later passed second reading after receiving the support of lawmakers.

If enacted, the legislation will repeal two existing food and drug laws and establish a unified regulatory framework covering food,
medicines, vaccines, medical devices and other products that affect public health.

A New Era? US and Saudi Arabia Near Landmark 30-Year Nuclear Agreement

Published

on

The United States is set to announce a landmark 30-year nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia, aimed at establishing a civilian nuclear program in the kingdom, according to reports from US media outlets.

The deal, expected to be unveiled Wednesday, comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The New York Times cited US officials confirming that the Trump administration would formally sign and announce the agreement, which is projected to generate billions of dollars for the US nuclear industry.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the pact could allow US companies to build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia.
However, the proposal has drawn opposition from US lawmakers across party lines and Israeli officials, who fear the program could be diverted toward developing nuclear weapons.
While the deal will be submitted to Congress, its approval is not required for implementation. Washington has also sought to link the nuclear agreement to broader strategic goals, including Saudi Arabia’s potential normalization of ties with Israel and a US-Saudi defense pact.
Saudi Arabia has long insisted on its right to pursue a civilian nuclear program, similar to the UAE, which signed a nuclear deal with Washington in 2009 but does not enrich uranium.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in Manila, declined to confirm the deal but assured that Washington would not enter any agreement that risks nuclear proliferation.
The announcement comes as the US war with Iran continues to destabilize the region, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels threatening to blockade Saudi ports, a move that could disrupt global oil supplies.

After Weeks of Speculation, Ogun Assembly Reaches Verdict on Oluomo

Published

The Ogun State House of Assembly has officially exonerated former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of embezzlement allegations tied to his removal from office in 2024.

During Wednesday’s plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, lawmakers adopted a resolution that commuted Oluomo’s impeachment to a resignation.

After reviewing available records, the House concluded that embezzlement was not part of the removal notice served on him and could not be proven.
Ajayi’s motion for adoption was seconded by Mr. Yusuf Amosun and unanimously approved by voice vote.
The Assembly cited Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), affirming Oluomo’s right to fair hearing. In its resolution, the House withdrew the embezzlement allegation, stating it would no longer form part of the reasons for his removal.
Lawmakers further resolved to overturn the impeachment and record his exit as a resignation, describing the move as necessary for unity and harmony among members.

Big Change Ahead? FG Set to Replace Multiple Emergency Lines with Just One Number

Published

on

The Federal Government has announced plans to implement 112 as Nigeria’s nationwide emergency telephone number, aiming to unify and strengthen the country’s emergency response system.

The initiative was disclosed in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), following a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and a delegation from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) at the Presidential Villa.

The move comes days after the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Shettima, approved the adoption of 112 across all levels of government and agencies.

Shettima directed the NCC to develop a roadmap for implementation and to collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to improve coordination nationwide.

“The Vice President assured the delegation that the project would be sustained, with funding mobilised through NEC and private sector support,” the statement read.

NCC Chairman Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe noted that about 35 Emergency Communications Centres had already been established across the country, but urged greater support from governors, the police, ambulance services, and NEMA to keep them operational.

He stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on collective commitment:“Everyone is expected to buy into this initiative. It is a patriotic duty to ensure that anyone in distress can get help swiftly.”

The adoption of 112 is expected to streamline emergency response, reduce delays, and provide Nigerians with a single, reliable number for police, fire, medical, and disaster-related emergencies.

Political Analyst Urges Nigerians to Treat Political Commentators With Greater Skepticism (Must Read)

Published

on

A public affairs commentator, Hon. Nkemakonam “Olman” Nwonwu, has called on Nigerians to stop reacting with surprise or anger to the changing political positions of some prominent commentators, arguing that many have developed a pattern of aligning with interests that benefit them.

In a statement shared under the Olnationz platform, Nwonwu cited figures such as Kenneth Okonkwo, Daniel Bwala, and Reno Omokri as examples of individuals whose public positions, according to him, often change depending on prevailing political interests.

He argued that rather than allowing such statements to shape public opinion or provoke emotional reactions, Nigerians should approach political commentary with caution and evaluate every claim based on facts and evidence.

According to Nwonwu, the country’s future should be guided by integrity, accountability, and credible leadership rather than by “loud voices” whose positions appear to shift for convenience.

He further warned that giving excessive attention to what he described as political opportunists only increases their influence, urging citizens to focus instead on substantive national issues and credible public discourse.

The remarks add to the ongoing debate over the role of political commentators and influencers in shaping public opinion in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
